The Real Test
A friend of, mine said to me
concerning his ability to drink;
"I can take a drink, or leave it
alone", .•
Immediately I. questioned him:
"Holy do you know? Have you
ever tried leaving it alone ;for a
week, a month, or longer?"
My friend was: very honest, but
a little crestfallen to have to ad-
mit that he never had tried to
abstain for any such period. He
admitted that be was in no posi-
tion to make such a statement.
There may be manyboastful
drinkers who shrug off the habit
of compulsive drinking as, did my
friend, The real test is by total
abstinence over a period of time.
If anyone has the ability 'to ab-,
stain for a month, he probably, has
power to abstain forever,
