Principle Of Modern Nursing
Due To "Lady With Lamp"
In London's Waterloo Place, diiions, but Florence Nightingale
and her assistants lost no time in
transforming the crude accom,
modation into clean comfortable
quarters.
All was not easy for her little
band at Scutari. To begin with,
even the thought of women at war
was not welcomed by: the hard-
bitten military officers of the day.
What was more, they saw no need
to change their methods of treat-
ing the sick. But she succeeded
in her task, despite the hindrance
and opposition. Soon a second hos-
pital was established at Balaclava,
where British soldiers recovered
from their wounds and acholera
epidemic that was thinning their
ranks pitifully. Loving care had
come to the Army's sick and
wounded,
On her return to England, Flor-
ence Nightingale was honoured; a
testimonial fund awarded to her
was used to found Nightingale
Home, attached to St, Thomas'
Hospital, for the training of nur-
ses, Royal recognition came in
her late life from King Edward
VII when he presented Florence
Nightingale with the Order of
Merit in 1907.
Finally, in 1910, Florence Night-
ingale died, at the age of 90. Her
life had been one of self-denial
and privation; during her latter
years, she suffered much from the
effects of the strenuous Crimean
campaign which had drained her
strength and left her wasted and
w'eak.
The final mark of the British
there is a monument. It tells the
story of the Crimean War and
features. the contribution of a wo-
man -an angel some called her—.
who, in face of difficulties and op-
position, ministered to the sick and
wounded of that campaign. She is
the "Lady with the Lamp"—Flor-
ence Nightingale.
Florence Nightingale is known
around the world as the woman
who placed the nursing .profession
on the road to honour and pres-
tige. She first became interested
in nursing in 1844, later studying
at Alexandria and Kaiserwerth
about 1850. In 1853, she accepted
the post of Lady Superintendent
of the Institution for Sick Govern-
esses in Harley Street, London,
where her administrative genius
transformed .the institution from
a,badly-run, inefficient hospital to
a clean, pleasant home for patients
and, what was more important to
the patrons, it became a solvent
self-supporting organization in less
than five months.
The real story of Florence
Nightingale—the story which has
made her name immortal—began
in 1854 when she recruited 38
nurses to accompany her to the
Crimea. Army hospitals had long
been noted for their unsterile con -

people's esteem came with the
erection of the Crifnean War
monument in 1915. Florence
Nightingale had done more than
nurse a sick army back to health;
she had established a firm footing
for the training of nurses and had
gained a high respect for a pro-
fession previously regarded with
disdain.
Today's nurses our modern
Florence Nightingales --carry with
them a reflected glory and a high
ideal for their honoured and re-
spected vocation. In them, the
Lady with the Lamp still walks
hospital corridors, bringing com-
fort, healing .. , hope.
