In 1853, she accepted the post of Lady Superintendent of the Institution for Sick Govern- esses in Harley Street, London, where her administrative genius transformed .the institution from a,badly-run, inefficient hospital to a clean, pleasant home for patients and, what was more important to the patrons, it became a solvent self-supporting organization in less than five months. The real story of Florence Nightingale—the story which has made her name immortal—began in 1854 when she recruited 38 nurses to accompany her to the Crimea.
