"Stop" Signs 1)o
Mean "Stop"
Reminds the Chief
Speed ton fast for conditions is
a factor in one of every three
fatal traffic accidents.
Too many drivers involved in ac-
cidents failed to realize that speed
limits are based on favourable
conditions. When conditions are
less ideal, speed must be reduced
for safety.
Let's put it this way. At, 40
m.p.h. a car striking a fixed ob-
ject will suffer the sarne damage
as if it were dropped from a four -
storey building. This is relatively
the same impact as two cars, each
going 30 m.p.h., meeting head on.
Adverse weather, heavy traffic
and driver fatigue are factbrs
which call for slower speeds. In
the vicinity of schools or parked
cars on residential streets, even
25 m.p.h. can be a dangerously
nigh speed when children are play-
ing nearby.
Strict,- impartial enforcement of
speed laws is one of our most ef-
fective ways of preventing acci-
dents. When someone is appre-
hended for exceeding the speed
limit by a few miles per hour, he
rarely regards his actions as
wrong doing. He invariably in-
sists that he had complete control
of his vehicle, and the influence a
his actions on other road users is
ignored,
Too many experienced drivers
depend on their sense of speed
rather than their speedometers an
tell them how fast they are go-
ing. With the improvement in
comfort and ease' of handling mo-
tor vehicles, a sense of speed de-
veloped in earlier makes of ears
is most unreliable today. Con-
fronted with an emergency, they
suddenly find that the control
they expected to have over their
jcars DOES NOT EXIST — only
3
ecause they are going faster than
they thought.
Speed controlled according to
conditions, and within posted lim-
its, will do as much to prevent
accidents as any other single ele-
ment in the field of traffic safety.
There are too many CHANCES
taken .today. A policeman may
stop a driver for not coming to a
FULL STOP at a "STOP" sign.
What is the usual answer? "I
slowed down and there was noth-
ing coming," These are a group
of words from "Famous Last
Words". Get -into the habit of
coming to a fall stop rather than
the habit of slowing down.
I was speaking on speeding with
a local business man the other
day and he said, "My interpreta-
tion of the 30 -mile speeding law
is that when the town is busy,
(that is during the day time),
aamitatliat 30 miles is fast enough,
i
but n the evening or at night I
consider that it is quite safe to
drive more than 30 in the town."
The law says 30 MILES AN
HOUR is the top limit. That does
not take much interpretation. Nor
does the white sign with black
letters marked: "STOP Through
Higliway."
—CHIEF JOE.
In 1953 the federal government
spent $26.3 million on administra-
tion of the federal. contributory
unemployment insurance plan an
in addition contributed $31.9 mil-
lion to the fund out of tax rev-
enues.
