Starlings Rescue
Thedford Crops
From Armyworm
Steve and Martin Licko„ who
oWn and operate a large acreage
of bogland north of Thedford, are
high in their praise of the often
despised starlings and cowbirds
who came like a cloud in thous-
ands and devoured army worms
which attacked and . destroyed
nine acres of Their barley.
These birds literally covered
the ground -infested area and fell
over each other in their rush to
eat up the worms.
Very Destructive
The Licko brothers have farmed
in the Thedford area for a num-
ber of years and have never seen
anything like the 'destructive
worms in this area, they Said.
When crossing one road the worms
covered it thoroughly for some
20 feet. The brothers report that
another field of barley was being
attacked and the centre eaten out
of it just as the starlings and cow-
birds" moved. in.
Speculation Is that the birds
have now travelled to other areas
under attack and are still eating
worms.
