Toll -Hall Seaforth was the centre h of ' a booming salt mining industry 40 years ago, and an attempt to re- start mining seven years ago fail- ed due to high costs. Introducing a new method of ex- traction to • Canada, Seaforth Chemicals hope to produce salt with a minimum of labor and cost. Extensive ,government tests in, the area have revealed an unlimit- ed supply of brine in its purest form. Engineers of the Ozark-Mahonic engineeringfirm Oklahoma,. are dra drawing up blue prints for. the in- stallation of the new equipment. A submerged combustion system in each unit is fired by butane gas and is heat from the fired gas crystal Te the salt which is blown into a silo and plans tolstart iwt h one unit whThe ich costs $90,000, and later add others. The equipment needs only one engineer to operate. Mayor Dr. E. A. McMaster, Seaforth, second vice-president of the company, has said that the daily output from each machine will be about 100 tons. One of the failings of the company which attempted to re -start the industry seven years ago he said, was that it used the old drying method which took a maximum of labor, and resulted in high costs. He predicted a ready market for Canadian -produced salt, as the country at present imports large amounts of the mineral from the United States. President of the company is. Earl Elliott, director of a Toronto funeral home. First vice-president is Norman Brooke, Montreal; secretary -treasurer, Merton Reid, Seaforth; director of the comp- any, H. L. Rowntree, Toronto.
