"Grain Capital"
Ready For
1954 Harvest
Although Ftensall has a popula-
tion of only 750 people, it claims
to be the grain capital of On-
tario. The centre of a very pro-
ductive farming district, Hensall
has three large grain elevators.
One of them, operated by W. G.
Thompson and Sons Ltd., is the
largest inland elevator in Ontario.
With harvest time about to be-
gin, Hensall district grain is rip-
ening fast. Duncan Cooper was
one of the first farmers in Ontario
to start harvesting wheat and
many others have their crop ready
for the threshing gang now.
Barley, the main grain crop of
the area, is shaping up nicely and
a large crop' of field peas, another
big money crop, is expected again
this year.
Hensall's claim to fame arises
from the large tonnage of grains
and peas shipped annually.
The huge holdover crop jam-
ming elevators at Montreal and
every other storage plant across,
the Dominion, may have its effect
on Hensel farmers this season.
.Already a major buyer has signif-
ied it will cut orders in Hensall
this year considerably.
Three firms operate elevators in
Hensall, George 7'. Mickle and
Son, Cook Brothers Limited, and
W. G. Thompson and Sons Ltd.
The Thompson elevator, built re-
cently after fire destroyed a for-
mer one, has used a different
type of construction from that
normally employed. With storage
capacity for 100,000 bushels, the
elevator was built from cement
slab, with heavy steel bars wrap-
ped around the outside of each
stack as reinforcement.

In Memoriam
In memory, of Frankie Switzer,
who passed away July 27, 1950:
"We little knew when we awoke
that morn,
The sorrow the d,ay would bring;
For the call was sudden, the
• sheck severe,
To part with one we loved so
dear.
e titonder why he had to die
Without a chance to say good-

No morning dawn, no night re-

But that we think of you.
Those left behind are very dear,
But none replaces you."
