ISE—In Clinton Public Hospit 4 al on Friday, February 12, 1954, to Mr. and Mrs. George Wise, Clinton, a son, (William Dan MARRIAGES Fred Smallacombe Fred Smallacombe, 80, who died Monday at the Consitt Nursing Home, Hensall, hadlived in that village most of his =life. "He was born at Exeter and when he came to Hensall .as a small boy he saw the old Huron and Bruce Railway when it first went through in 1875, and was so terrified when he saw the train that he ran and hid. • In municipal life he served as reeve and councillor for several terms. Active in the Conservative party, he was also a member of the Park Board, Chamber of Com- merce, Huron Lodge, AF and AM No. 224; and Hensall Lodge IOOF No. 223. He had the first ice rink there, and also conducted a restaurant. He started the. onion business here for Steele Briggs and was in charge 'for many years. He recalled that when the coop- er shop and stave factory opened many barrels were made with men averaging 40 a day. Mr. Smalla- combe beat the record by making 100 barrels in a day at five cents per barrel. Mr. and Mrs. Smailacombe cele- brated their golden wedding in December 1949. She died in 1950. Surviving are one son, Fred, Guelph; two daughters, Mrs. E. Normington and Mrs. C. Faber, Hensall; one brother, Garnet, Guelph; and one sister, Mrs. Geo- rge Walker, Windsor. Funeral service was held in the Bonthron funeral home, Hensall, Wednesday afternoon, under the auspices of Huron Lodge with Rev. W. J. Rogers officiating.
