PETER, of the BACK SHOP
We are not going to mention the
weather again. Just last week,
when we groped for a few words
to say, and stumbled on the. age-
old subject of the weather, it was
slushy. Sure, but when you folks
picked up your News -Record early
Thursday morning, it certainly
was anything but that, Now with
the sudden change in temperature
between Tuesday and Wednesday,
we're not going to risk a predict-
ion for tomorrow. My goodness,
we're just as like as not to wake
lip Thursday and find a warm July
breeze floating down the back al-

The end of January is well
within sight. With that date
comes to the back shop,a del-
uge of church reports, year-end
reports of all sorts, figures and
funds. Here, in the Back Shop
we deal in Seasons. All the way
through the cold one, the luke-
warm one, the warm one, the
briskly cool one and back to the
cold season, the work of the
Back Shop seems to travel along
as surely as the sun in the morn-
ing and the moon at night.
Great woe in the shims along
,the New-Reeord block this week.
No it's not the matter of snow in
heaps, though our stretch of side-
walk has not yet been reached by
the busy streets foreman and hib
men. , No; it's not the fact that

Christmas bills are being paid, and
everyone is looking forward with
anxiety to the income tax pay-
ment date; nor is it due to the fact
that the nickel postage rate is
soon to come.

No, it's rather a personal loss.
During the past few months
we've all made a friend of a
young person by the name of
Baby Campbell. (Not to be
confused with the senior Camp-
bell Man up at the main inter-
section, though he, of course, is
a likeable gentleman, too). This
young Bobby arrived with his
parents to live upstairs. over Mr.
•Charlesworth's store, and in no
time at all, the young lad had
made himself acquainted with
practically everyone in the block.
Now Bobby's dad has been post-
ed to some spot way out West, and
yesterday they left.

We're going to miss young Bob
in our Shop, He had a gay habit
of coming through the front of-
fice fairly quietly, and as he
reached the back shop door, he'd
let out a gay little whoop all his
own. The first time, it practic-
ally startled me off my perch
On the big press but since then
we had gotten quite used to his
greeting. Of course, we never
introduced ourselves to the you-
ng man, for we've gained a bit
of knowledge of the reaction
boys have to mice, and we are
fully determined to live a few
more months at least.
* *
He used to visit in the front of -
ice a bit, too, and we noticed
that a pencil and a bit of paper
ept hint happy for long periods.
He helped the girls with their ty-
ing, and generally helped along
he efficiency of the News-Rec-
rd Staff. (Pardon me, that's a
it of a misstatement perhaps, but
t least he did do quite a bit for
the morale of everyone here).
* * *
We'd like to wish Bobby and
• his parents happiness in their
new home in Manitoba, and
we're truly sorry to see them go.

FIRESIDE PARM FORUM
(By Mrs. Jessie R. Tebbutt)
The home of Mr. and Mrs. George
Hoggart was the meeting place
for members of the Fireside Forum
of Hullett, on Monday, January
18, when 22 members attended.
The topic for the evening, "Stop,
Look, and. Listen," was well and
thoroughly discussed by tWo sep-
arate groups, many interesting
points being brought to light on
the subject. In the opinion of this
forum, many accidents at level
crossings could be avoided, if the
following precautions would be
taken: People should heed the
signs, Extra stop signs should be
erected 300 to 500 feet back, esp-
ecially at places where you cannot
see the tracks until you are al-
most on them. Keep signs in good
repair, brush and bushes cleared
around signs on back roads, mak-
ing visibility clear. Bells or flash-
ing lights in cities, towns, busy
highways, and main roads. Move
snow fences as they sometimes
block the view of signs. Cost
should be shared by federal gov-
ernment, railways and highways,

THE NINERS
"(intended for last week)
The Niners met at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Haggitt,. where
Mrs. Haggitt Was in charge of the
discussion on the Stop, Look Sys-
tem used at Railway crossings.
The forum members recalled 15
unprotected level crossings in the
district. The forum suggests that
the automatic short arm gate, or
a wig -wag would be satisfactory,
or at least have all crosings "good
and rough so people would at least
have to slow up."
Cost of crossing protection
should be shouldered at least in
part, by the township and the
county.
VARNA \
Mrs.. George Beatty who is

boro, contracted pneumonia recent -
y. She is, however, •improving,
and hopes to return to her school
shortly.
Official Board
The Official Board of the Varna
pastoral charge of the United
Church met on January 18, when
reports for 1953 were presented.
Arrangements were made for the
annual congregational meeting.
• Rink In Use
The rink this season is again in
he charge of the Varna Orange
Association. The very cold weath-
r has made the ice excellent for
hose who enjoy skatirig. Season
ickets have been issued at nom -
nal charges to cover maintenance,
and the interest shown by the
Lodge members is greatly apprec-
ated.
New Library Books
The village library has recently
added some new books to its col-
ection. From this library, books
are supplied to some of the schools.
The library contains some very
good books -fictional and non-fict-
°nal. Every family in the area
hould subscribe to the library and
greater interest in this worthy
nstitution is solicited. The library
s located in the home of Mrs.
Elizabeth Beatty.
The United Church Young Peo-
ple's Union of Varna and Goshen
held a .meeting on Monday, Jan-
uary 25, The president, Ivan Mc-
Clymont, presided. Miss Ann Ost-
rom was in charge of the Christ-
en Stewardship programme. The
scripture was read by Miss Nancy
Webster. The topic was "Jesus
and Stewardship." The attendance
was good and it is quite evident
that the young people of Varna
and Goshen maintain a keen inter-
est in this organization designed
to meet their needs.
The pianist was Miss Marjorie
Webster. The recreation period
was held in the village rink where
the young people thoroughly en-
joyed themselves skating.
