POULTRY FIRM MAY BUILD
A1' ADDITION.
The Gunn•Langlois Oompaoy, of
Montreal, who Nought the Standard
elevator some few months ago, is now
renovating the brick portion so es to
adapt it for the poultry buying and
fattening business in which it pur-
poses embarking so extensively bere.
The second floor will be given over to
the fattening, and shortly as many as
two thousand birds inay Been here
at any one time, being .prepared along
modern methods for the market. The
care of these birds, with
the killing
and -plucking. will give employment
to quite a number of people. The
large basement is being floored with
concrete and will be used this season
by the National Land Fruit and. Pack-
ing Oompany for storage and repack-
ing purposes. As the business of pro-
duce o
this town
ows,
duce gr
poultry
will prove a convenient
centre for
Huron County, and the Gunn -Lang-
lois people realizing this, have pre-
pared plans for a building 100x50 feet,
which will be strictly up•to dade. This
they . expect, will be ready for use
this time next year.
THE REASON WHY. I
"Saturday Morning":published in
Barrie, has this to say: -rhe mail or-
der houses, insane speculation,' and
the trek to the West are the three
great influences which are sapping the '
life out of the rural sections of Ontar-'
ice But there will be a reaction some 1
time, The rural papulation will wane
up some day to the conclusion that it
is about time these things should stop,
The prosperous villages and towns"
that,•used to cover the province are
gradually falling by the wayside, sim-
ply because the rural population has
been sending the money that should
go to support these towns away to the
city to let the big moguls of the mail
order houses buy steam yachts and
endow hospitals. Wouldn't it be
fairer if this money was kept at home
and distributed amongst the numer-
ous business places which indirectly
support the sebools, the churches, the
libraries and other institutions that.
make life in the rural sections more
pleasant, more 'especially when local
merchant can, be nine cases out of ten,
meet the competition of the mail
order houses, and can frequently do
better?
