St. Catharines, Feb. 26.-Sinee the
visit to this city a.nd district on Fri-
day of Engineer 1Vicksteed of the
Canadian Northern Railveay Co., St.
Catharines has practically abandoned
hope of having the main line of the
eompany diverted frorc Thorold to
this vicinity. Wieksteed had inters
views with representatives of most
of the leading manufacturers in the
city. He also looked over the survey-
ed route and the one suggested ais
an alternative, but finally declared
that from this city it would be im-
possible to obtain a grade that would
permit an engine to draw more than
twenty-five cars, whereas the grade
on the route surveyed will permit' of
the hauling of fifty care in one train.
The route surveyed begins the as-
cent of the mountain this side of
Grimsby. It, rises near Jordan, then
makes a detour towards St. John's,
circles back to Decew's Falls within
a few miles of his city, then passes
on to Thorold, using 'the present
bridges over both canals and con.
Unties on to Niagara Falls.
Mr. Wicksteed, however, threw, out
the suggestion that in all probability
the company will begin at on,ce on
the construction of an electric spur
from Niagara -on -the -Lake through this
city to connect with the proposed
reain line at Jordan.
