A quantity of seed e is will he pnrehased in Germany and torwarded to framers in Northern Ontario to be grown under contract for the members of the aseociation. At present the price paid by vege- table growers foe seed peas is $10 a bushel. It will be possible to secure them from the north for only a fret: - nun of this price. As a result of the success that has attended the growing or: seed potatoes in Northern Ontario the association has made arrangements to largely in- canase the quantitn grown there foe the metnbers. Here Are Some Sensible Precau- tions Advised By a Practical Physician. There will be about 1,500e oases of pneumonia, in Montreal this winter Do you expect to escape its ravages ? For of these 1,500 over 400 will die. Statistics carefully kept for nearly a thousand years prove this. The ancient Greeks, especially Hip poolrates, deoribed pneumonia exactly as we kuow it to -day. It in mali- gnant inflammation of the lungs due to minute organisms, or germs. These blockade the air passages, poison the breathed air, and weaken the heart. . There are skveral forms of pneu- monia, but the common tyPe is pro. duced by tt e tiny shotahaped germ, the pn eu mococc ccus, Dnder the microscope this is it Lilly, black speck, surrounded by a transp trent capsule. It belongs to the lowest order of living, moving plant. Despite its act- ive motility, it is not an animal, but a' vegetable parasite. Pneumonia is commonly associated with cold weather. In poiret of fact it is most prevalent in winter, but it is a disease o31 seasons and all climates. Wherever you find civilized beings, there you will find pnentannia. It it3 at its worst in January. and is least met with in July and August. A sudden chill, bowever, in Summer, is just as apt to end in pueinnoina, as a, sudden chill in winter. At the start, the symptoms are much like of a severe "cold" or influenza. A sharp thin is commonly followed by a high fever. Then appears a darting pain at the chest, a dry cough with a hlood stained sputum (internal infect. ions), and quick catchy breathing. Pitetunonia, when complicated is a self-limited disease. Toe attack can. not be shortened. The patient must be placed in a light, airy, well -venti- lated cent) and plenty of water, lem- onade and easily digested food each as egg elbutneu, milk. and fruit ;mice giv- einto bim.Modern physicians employ icepaicke to the 11011(1 185(1 chest to re - dime the fever, and relieve the pain. minor devices are used to alleviate (be cough, and support tin) strength of the sufferer. 9.gainst the pnemnococous itself, na- ture must still wage her war unaided, But, it is often possible fnr the alert doctor to lend :), helping hand to the over -burdened heart. Once upon a time whisky was ex- tensively used as a stimulant, hut pro- gressive physicians now hold that its employment is dangerous, ionl other measures are now applied. Fresh, (but warmed) ain and plenty of it, • is the thing most needed, Teets and hoepital roofs are the best placee to brg a Pin nemnonia pane/1110 health. H1GHLy with pnetimoniawas imprisomid in hot, In the old days the person afillieted close rooms and all sorts of powerful drugs were taken, Tontay good nurs- Mg is known to be superior. to drugs. Experiments arn now being amen., with a new vaccine for pneumonia. The Vast technical dieficulties in thi way of producing a pneumonia anti- toxin, bas led to the injection of pre- ventive doses of killed pneumonia germs, the on eurnocoeco. There seems to be some promise at for it con. quest 111 01)81 of Leer dread maladies. The man who hardens hirneen by cold baths and cold "rubnowns" in the morning and by wearing rational clothes, is far less apt to fall a victim than the men who bedlunin hot water and bundles himself up in absurdly heavy underclothes.
