Di the Historical Sketch of Bur -
1 on. County which The News -Record
has been reproducing it was stated
that the Sturdy family settled in
GGodertch Township in 1812. this
should have read 1,832 for the Stur-
dys were here five years before the
Mackenzie rebellion and wore among
the most staunch 'loyalists. This
family has always been prominently
identified with the history of this
township and has well . done its
share in bringing it to its present
prosperous condition.
The young people of the neighbor-
hood are looking forward to an en-
joyable time at the box social
which will be held in No. 9, school
on Thursday evening next for which
a good program is being prepared.
The anniversary services in Cole's
church on Sunday last were very
well gttended and were most suc-
cessful in every ivay. Rev. R. J.
M.eCornick of Holmesville was the
preacher, conducting afternoon and
evening services, and preaching stirr-
ing „and impressive sermons. The
offerings of the people were generous
and very satisfactory to the offic-
ials.,

Wingham L. O. L„ No. 794, on Fri-
day even+irug held one of the most
successful annual meetings over 'held
in Orange ' Hall. The attendance
numbered about 80. After general
business was. transacted, W. M. Mc
Kibbon gave an account of the past
year's business, which showed pros'-
perity in every 'department.
The following officers were then el-

The Presbyterian Sunday school
intend having their Christmas tree
on Monday, Dec. 23rd. Though this
event is specially for the members
of the school it is none the -less
one of -much interest and arouses
the enthusiasm of officers, teachers'
and pupils
Council meets on Saturday next.
Mr. F. W. Keys left on Saturday
for Orilla to, visit his sister, who
is at -present quite ill.
Mr, Harvey Reicl, son of Mr. and
Mrs, J. W. Reid, who has been at-
tending the Clinton Model, has been
engaged as teacher in U. S. S. No.
2, ITullett, at a halary' of five hun-
dred dollars. We have not a doubt
but that Ilarvey will "make good"
and do credit to his home township.
The • social held on Wednesday ev-
ening of last week was very well
attended and an enjoyable time was
spent,

Reeve. (lien and Councillor Keys
were in °linton on Monday in con-
nection with the contract for 30,500
yards of the Big Drano which has
been awarded to Mr. Janney Mac-
donald( an experienced dredging con-
tractor of Ellice township. The price
is twenty-five cents per yard the
lowest figure that was been quoted
though tenders have been called for
two or three times.

nection with the Presbyterian 'church
On Sunday ' last were well attended
and very successful. The preacher
for the day was the Rev. Me. .'Ur-
quhart of
r-quhartof Listowel, wlio preached in-
teresting and imprrissive sermons.
Good congregations were present ori
each occasion and the music was
also muck enjoyed.. it fowl supper
was given on Monday evening, the
attendance being a record one. 'l'he
supper was served in the rooiny
basement, and it certainlyleft little
to be ,desired, as is always the
case lwlien the Brucefield ladies un-
dertake anything of the sort. When
the good things provided had been
thoroughly enjoyekl an adjournment
was niacle to the body, of the ohureh
where an excellent program was given.
The pastor, Rev. Hall ;Woods, occupied
the chair, ' Addresses wore given by
Reg... Mr: Urquhart,, Rev: Mr. Car-
rier of Grand Bend and Rev. Mr.
Larkin' of Seafo-rth, Miss Beatrice
Marson and Miss Patterson and a
quartette from Seaforth also 'ren-
dered several musical numbers which
were much appreciated. The pro-
ceeds amounted to a snug suer and
altogether 'the officials• and inomLers
of the congregation are congratula-
ting themselves' upon the success ' of
the anniversary services.
