STRENGTH.
To Care for the Growing Family,
and Ilor Household Cares.
When there is a growing family
to cam for and the mother falls ill,
it is a serious matter. Many mo-
thers whO are On the go freni morn-
ing to night whose work, apparent -
is never done, heroioally try to
disguise their sufferings, and keep
an appearance of cheerfulness be-
fore their family. Only themselves
know how they are distressed by
headaches and backaches, dragging
down pains and neivous weakoess ;
how their nights are often sleep-
, less, and they arise to a new day's
w,ork tired, depressed and unre-
freshed. Sueh mothers should
know that these sufferings are
usually due to a lack of good nour-
ishing blood.. They should know
that the thing above all others they
need to give them new health and
'strength is rich, red blood, and
that among all medicines there is
none can equal Dr. Williams' Pink
Pills fur their blood -making, health
restoring qualifees. Every suffer-
ing woman with a home and finely
to care for should give these pills a
Lail' trial, for they will keep her in
health and strength, and make her
-work easy. Here is strong proof
that these Pills do what is claimed
for them. Mrs. Henry Thomas,
Dryden, Ont., says: "When my
second child wits born I was so weak
and run down thee I could ec,a,reely
walk across a room. My baby was
small and weak also, and cried and
werriecl night and day until 1 dis-
covered that the child was starv-
ing, as my nurse had turne,d almost
to water. My -husband got ine a
eupply of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills,
and I began taking them. The
first beneficial effects were noticed
in that my child began to thrive,
as my nurse began to improve, and
baby slept'better and naturally. It
wee not long until I began to feel
the improvement myself. and I
daily gained new strength, and
baby was growing very rosy and
fat. I continued "using the Pills
while I was nursing him and found
• myself with •all the vigor of good
health, and able to easily do TaY
housework, which had been so great
a drag on 'me before. I am now
never without Dr. Willia,rns' Pink
Pills in the house, and take an oc-
oasional dose when I feel tired. I
can strongly recommend these Pills
to all nursing women, especially if
weak oy run down."

Finnish Traveller Tells of Fairy
Tales of New Guinea.
Fresh details of interest concern-
ing the little-known •land of New
Guinea have recently been brought
home by the Finnish_ student and
traveller, Dr. Gunnar 1.anatanall,
Few parts of the world still con-
tain so many remnants of the life
of the pure savage as does this vast
island, and for many years past it
has naturally attracted a large
share of attention from all who
make a study of anthropology. Un-
til recently cannibalism was preva-
lent; Int it is now confined to a few
tribes, and when Archbishop Don-
aldson was among them some years
ago he found that the natives, many
of whom bad been converted to
Christianity, were extreanely un-
willing to talk about their •old
ways. Mr. R. W. Williamson., who
returned last year from a stay
among the 1k/rani!' savages, had,
however, another story to tell, for
this section of the people ean still
enjoy a banquet of humite fieseh.
They do not slaughter their vic-
tims merely for greed, but wait un-
til a battle or private fight cam give
them both a meal amd the excuse
for takilie it. In other respects he
described them AS being a simple
and quiet race, with an extremely
complicated religion, the origie of
which they did not in the least
know. They believed thae the fig
tree and certain ether plants were
haunted, while their lives were, to
a great extent, spent ie feat of
sorcery.
Dr. Liman= entirely confirms
these stories of their wonderfully
imaginative nature, and he relates
how ehey tell remarkably long and
compile/seed Wee of romance, in
wheel the fortunes, of hero and
heroine are marred by the machi-
nations of witches.. In most of their
stories can be seen a dign resem-
blance to the fairy legends of Eu-
rope, a point which Slimed attract.
the attention of ehe etudent of cote-
para,tive religion. Of their morals
he speaks in the highest terms, yet
he relates that their code allows a
ceremonial exchange of wives.
Muelt name matter of intereet is
likely stdbe published when Dr.
Landtman brings out the whole his-
tory of his travels' among this
strange people. The Papuans, who
comprise the majority of the inhabi-
tants are n people of fine physique,
and, according to the latest reports,
are fond of sports, in which the -wo-
men join with the men, the game
being not unlike our English hock-
ey. Many of the tribes in the moun-
tains, sbill live by raids on lowland
districts, but in other parts the peo-
ple are quietly earning a living
from eultivoiting the soil.

ROYALTY TR EA S UDE S SPADES
They Are Relics of Tree Plantings
While on Visite.
At this time ef year, when royal
personages generally visit among
their friend, a perfect forest of
royally planted trees is springing
up, this being the customary me-
mento of such visits.
It is usual on these occasions to
offer the distinguished tree planter
a new spade with which to perform
the, operation, a suitable inscription
being afterwards placed on the im-
plement, which is preserved as a re-
lic.
Quite the most interesting collec-
tion of these tokens is to, be found
at, Sandringham,, where a, whole
avenue of trees has been planted
by one or another member of the
royal family, froin the late Queen
downward, or by some hardly less
well-known persons. Each tree
bears e label giving the date end
the name of the distinguished vise
thr vvho planted it.
One Wonders -where the costly but
useless gifts, silver trowels and the
like, which royalty perforce accum-
ulates, are kept and what becomes
of there. Tradition bee it that there
are cellars fual of presenta, tion al-
bums, addresses inscribed on vel-
lum, and ether truck of the sort, at
Sandringham and at Buckingham
Palace.

An overworked doctor tells his
experience:
"About three years ago as the
result of doing two men's work, at-
tending a large preetice and look-
ing after the detaile of another
business, my health broke down
completely, and I was little better
than a physical wreck.
"I suffered from indigestion and
constipation'loss of weight and
appetite, bloating and pain after
meals, lose of memory and lack of
nerve force for continued mental
applitation.
"I became irritable, easily an-
gered and despondent withont
cause. The heart's action became
irregular and weak, with frequent
attach of palpitation during the
first, hour or two after retiring.
"Some Grape -Nuts and cut ba-
nanas came for my lunch one day
and pleased me particularly with
the result. I get more satisfaction
from it than from anything I had
eaten for months, and on further
investigation and use, adopted
Grape -Nuts for my morning and
evening meals, served usually with
cream and a sprinkle of salt or
sugar.
"My improvement was rapid and
permanent, in weight as well as in
physics,' a,nd mental endura-nce. In
a word, I am 'filled with the joy of
living again, and continue the daily
use of Grape -Nuts for breakfaet
and often ior the evening meal.

SPENDS $95,311,200 FOR WAR.
Italy Must Increase Taxation to
Cover Expenditure.
According to an official report
jest published the war with Turkey
cost Italy exactly $81,600,000 up to
August 3. This elm, represents the
expenditure sanctioned by Parlia-
ment for the War Office and Navy
Department and which naturally
has already been exhausted.
As the daily cost of the war is
calculated at $236,400, a further
Sinn of $13,711,200 must be added to
the above, which consequently up
to the end of September amounts to
$95,311,200. It is hoped to pay up
the costs of the war by the surplus
from the budgets from 1911 to 1918.
The averege yearly surplus is about
$is,000,000, so that increased taxa-
tion will be neeessary ±0 cover the
cost of the war.
