The dory of the Blarney Stone
(which Mr. Win,ston Churchill kiss-

careless vagueness of 'historical de-

Blarney is a village four miles
north-west of Cork, Ireland, with
800 inhabitaeits,, It ia situated oil
the Blarney River and has teime
'celebrity for its tvreecle; but the
'castle and stone are, of courze,
the mein glory of the place.
The eastle ilittle MOTO than a

The famous stone is of. triangular
shape, and is lowere,d from theworl‘seourtwentyysa

twenty feet from the top. It bears
the following inscription: '

. 0
How the stone acquired its repu-
tation is disputed, but the version
'given by Wheeler's "Familiar Al-
lusions" holds the -field, probably
because it is' the only connected
tory offering anything like an ex-
planation.
When or hew it firet got its sin-
gular reputation is not known, but
the superetiticin concerning it is•
firmly fixed in the minds of 'the
Irish peasantry, hundreds of whom
resort to the castle every year for

with Carew, the Lerd Resident, on
condition of surrendering. the fert-

whenever the fulfi/ment a his
pledges was -demanded, he invented
some smooth and plausible excuse
for delay, till Carew became the
laughing stock of Elieabetli'a Min-
id/ere. • . ,
"Thus," says Wheeler, "the term
'blarney' became a byword and was
used to denote a of b, insinuating
and deceitful manner of speech."
It is said that Queen Elizabeth
herself wits the first to use the
