Goderich township' has a real tables' Cate;has. it bad and with reasan. lit dates, back three Week's and owes tots origin to the visit of a dog from '`Goderich town which passed across the township leaving dear knows how Much of the rabies germ in'its wake. Cine of the farms which the clog crossed over was that of Mts. Joseph .Salkeld of the first concession: Rabies not being in mind, nothing was thought of the dog at the time, but .a few days later several of the cattle 'became ill. Local dope not a0:eeting A cure the 'Goderich vet. was' sent for ,.and he dosed them too, but they glow worse rather than better. The actions .of the cattle finally became violent, s'uspicion was aroused and_ the Pro vinciai Board of Health notified. An agent was at once sent up from the city and on investigation he was convinced that it was a case of the real rabies. Several of the cattle are dead anti' the whole herd has been quarantined. While mending a fence which had en- closed the cattle, bit. Tom Salkeld had one of his hands scratched. and as it began to look had on Saturday he welt down to the Pasteur Institute at Toronto for treatment. The in- jury might have healed up all eight without the treatment, but the risk was too great to chalice it. • All this caused muck concerti throughout the township and the feel- ing was intensified on Monday when it became known that Reg. Sturdy, son of Mr, George W. S'tu'dy of the Ot.h con. hail been that day attacked by a strange dog at the gravel pit ,on the same link. Net having any- thing -n-ith which to defend lt:.:nself, Reg. fought oil' the dog as best he could, but he was cut about the hands and leg. The dog finally made. off. Reeve McClure was at once notified and he promptly called together the Board' of Health consisting df John Cox, chairman, John Middleton, and 'James Johnstone, with Clerk N. W. Trewartha, secretary. IN That the case was serious was at 0 a 1ne'intent to the Board and it P1, acted without delay, issuing a pro- clamation. that all dogs ",must he se-' curely shwa up of destroyed and, that any dog running at large may be shot by any person whatsoey Lr- This or- der: is to remain in effect ler sixty. days Mr: Willis. Bell was appointed in- spector and it was impressed upon hint that the law must be. enforced. While the' board was in session it seemed as if half the , countryside was hunting for.,the dog that had attacked' Reg. Sturdy. The pursuers were in autos, in buggies: and on foot and more firearms were in evidence than has been seen in the township at mie, time in many years. The scare is real and until the dog s' located' people will go about. with bot'li eyes open and Grimed with eith- er a club or a gun. It is probable though dead by this time as mad dogs ane short hived. 'Reg Sturdy has gone to Toronto for Pasteur treatment and it is un- derstood Vet Clark and Buteber ,,Tur- ney of Goderich will do likewise. On a number of farms where the orchards have been sprayed lately several cattle have been taken sick and Mr. James Harrison of near Portca's Hill had one die. Vet i'ree- man from Goderich was called in and at first pronounced. it nabies, but on further investigation said it was the result of eating the poison from the spraying. This set at rest to some extent the alarming stories. which have been in circulation one of them ^ to the effect that forty catldc in the Porker's Hill vicinity had been' ordered shot. Mr. John Cox, chairman of the Board of health, has set a good ex- ; ample. He had a good dog and one that he and his family had bo - Come attached to but he had it shot on Tuesday. o'At a time like leis", said the chairman, "'we cannot afford to take any chances," ',.:What the Fireless Cooker Will Do.
