funeral of the -late Mrs. Andrew
Green at Loyal on 'Friday last.
Mrs.'. H, Goodridge of Edmonton is
' on ant extended visit with Mr. and
Mrs. George Days, - Mrs. Good-
ridge is a sister... of Mr. Albert
May, well known in Clinton and
vicinity but who is now residing
in Montana.
Mrs. Geo. Trowhill and little daugh-
ter, Miss Ina, accompanied by the
former's sister, Mr's. Ritchie, left
on Tuesday for Lethbridge, where
Mr. Trowhill has been for some
time and where the family wilt iltpro-
bably
reside in future.
Miss Haddock, who a couple of years,
or so ago spent some months in
Clinton with her aunt, MTs. Il. Tack
mier, has passed her final examina-
tion at the Brandon hospital . and
was awarded a sliver medal. The
examiners reported that Nurse Mad -
dock's papers were of a very high
order,' refec"ibg much diligent
study.
Mrs. John Wilford, who returned re-
cently to her home at Blyth af-
ter spending the winter at San
Diego, California, is the guest this
week ofher sisll.r.,,Mes. T. Mac-
kenzie Jr. of town. Mrs. Wil-
ford , enjoyed the winter months
eery much, but was after all glad
to get back to the old home pro-
vince and county again.
Mrs. Fred. J. Hill, Master•George
and Miss Annie, are on a month's
visit with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs.. T. W. Pinner, Cordova Min-
es, Peterboro county.
Mrs. W. S. Downs is a patient in the
hospital this week having' under-
gone an operation on Tuesday. The
friends are hoping that her t'coy-
cry will be speedy and complete.
Little Miss Jessie Irwin, who has
been the guest of her aunt, Mrs.
W. S. Harland for some months,
accompanies her mother this week
to Saskatchewan where the family
intend to locate.
Mr. Ogle. Cooper of Collingwood spentt
the week end ire town the guest of
his sisters. He was accompanied:

Mrs. (Rev.) Wade had the misfortune
to Pali tine other day and sustained
a fracture of the thigh. Owing to.
advanced age,, the accident is a ser-
ious one and the lady has the

sympathy of her •many friends.
Mrs. R. E. Manning, who was called
to Denver, Col.,, several weeks ago
owing to the illness of her mother,
the late. Mrs. Fisher, is expected
home this, week. She will be ac-
, companied by her sister, Miss his-
iter, who will spend some time
here.
Mr., and Mrs. John' Green returned to
Port Huron 'on Saturday last. They
, came over to attend the funeral of
the former's mother, Mrs. Andrew
Green^ of Loyal, who died on Tues-
day aged sixty-seven years. Mrs,
Green is survived by her husband,.
and seven children, th'is being but
the second break in the family. The
interment,; took, place in Colborne
cemetery on Friday.
Mr. W. .Jackson has been laid off
the past week r with an attack
of something that felt like scia-
tica, as bad if not a little worse.
The pain was severe enoughin all
conscienee,but to an active ratan
like "W. S." the 'enforced idleness
has been almost as hard to. bear.
It is in such emergencies that the'
value of the excellent staff by which
he is surrounded is most appreciat-
ed.
Mr. and Mrs,. Morgan Agnew, who
have pee!living in Stratford foe
some time, have returned: to town,
' Mr. Agnew having taken a position
in .the piano and organ factory.
Mr. and Mrs. James Finch Jr.,
have alsoreturned from the same
town. They came 'back a couple of
weeks or so ago and Mr. Finch, is
back at his old post in Clinton's big-
gest factory. The News -Record is
glad to see them back.

his home at Luckiiow on Saturday
and on Monday went to Meaford,
haying beers transferred to the
branch in that thriving' lakeside
town. Molsons is singularly .fort-
unate in the se:iectaon of its 'staff
and as for Mr. Johnston), the ons-
tourers here thought he was just
all right. They were sorry to see
him go and . so 'were the,young
people about town; among whom he
was very popular.

Two new batteries are being or-
ganized in the London division, to
compose tha XII Artillery Brigade
and for one of them, the 30th, God-
erich is to be headquarters. Mr.
Lewis has been appointed officer in
command, and to his genial influ-
ence over voters of both parties will
soon be added the glamor of a bril-
liant artillery,, uniform and the back-
ing of the' guns.

Ottawa, May. 13.—The Canadian po-
tato will -be saved from the danger
of canker, eareatentng from, Europe,
if the Department of Agriculture can
says it.. Potato canker. is declared
by department experts to ' be the most
dreaded enemy of the potato,, being
practically fneradlcable.` ht stays o in
the soil for years. it ',s a fungus
growth, and is very. prevalent in
Continental Europe and in England,
where it has wrought havoc with the
tuber crops.
The disease was recently discovered

of European potatoes, and the con-
signment was destroyed , Instanter.
Since then the regulations have been
amended, and a:routers will be is-
sued broadcasts over the Dominion
warning potato planners' against j the
use of seed potatoes from Europe.

are required to obtain a certificate
that the potatoes are not diseased.

completed his second year as pastor
of Knox and Burns churches. It
has been two years of . steady pro-
