The London, Huron and Bruce train from the north had a close call Mons day morning when it reached the main line at Hyde Park. The passenger train was justgoing over on to the south track when the engineer saw the signals were against it. -..He had just time to back in when a freight train whizzed past. Apparently the engineer on the freight was unable to' see the signal that was set against him. -The Bruce train was running very late and had stopped tolet a s- sen er 013 just before reaching Hyde Park, or otherwise it might have just got out on the main line when the freight came along. FALL SHOPPING AT HAND Scarcely a housekeeper who is not giving at this time, more or less thought to the purchase of clothing, and household comforts for the fall l and winter. We wonder if among the number there is anyone who has failed to inspect the stocks of the local mer chants before deciding upon their pur chases, To the casual observer the impression is irresistible that the stocks shown this fall have not been I equalled in the history of the town for smartness of style or variety. So great has been the care, and so obvious the good taste shown by our inerch ants in their buying, that no longer 1 does ib seem necessary to even consult , the lists of the catalcgue houses to get what one is assured' to be up to date in style'and finish. It is not wholly a case of urging the claims of local trade. It revolves itself unto a clear case 'of competition, and the local mer chant is able to hold his own. MUNICIPAL OWNERSHIP NOT ALWAYS THE BEST Advocates of municipal owner- ship are always holding up towns and cities in Britain as example of its succesls, but municipal under- takings do not all pay there, some of them are conducted at a loss. A recent parliamentary paper gives thirteen important towns in which out of 77 municipalienterprises only 28 even pretend to make a profit. The theory seems right, but the plan, as this shows. frequently fails in practice, ALICE IN WONDERLAND MINOR LOCALS. Advertise in The New Era. There's a reason, Better see if thd'se skates and boots are in' condition for this yearns grind, '• gone (ADVERTISEMENT) License and Regulation of the Nur Business Better Than The Scott Act. The members of the Huron Coun- ty Business Men's Association be- fore organizing to oppose the Scott Act in this County, considered the situation as it is at the present time, and ae it is likely' to be un- der the operation of the proposed law, if it should carry. - Under the licens'e system, hotels and shops are licensed to sell li- quors. These 'licenses are issued by the Government. Inspectors and Commissionersl are appointed by the Government whose duty is to see that only fit and proper men get' licenses, and that they live up to the [law after 'thoy . get them These 'Innspectors lank 'Commis- sioners are :.yell -known and re- sponsible men in the counties in which they live and represent the Government, and are men of high character; We frankly admit that mistakes may be and are occasion- ally made by these Inspectors and Commissioners, and that undesir- able men are sometimes granted li- censes and possibly are permitted to 'continue in the business far' too long,. Many of the- men, however, who are given licenses by these of- ficials fficia s are good' men and live up to the taw ;' and we contend that it is not necessary to vote ggood men out of business;' to get rich, of a few bad men who are in the business. That method would not be applied to any other line of business, and. it is unjust and unfair to apply it only to the liquor business. No thinking person would advocate do' ing away with all banking business because 'DOW and then a hanker e s commits robbery,. No s nible man would suggest getting rid of all physicians because some doctor's are convicted iol malpractice. No i:easonable ,man or woman would join in a movement to prohibit all sl,l preachers from preaching :be- cause now and 'then 1,:'ome etray from the straight:an•d,narrow .path of rectitude. To do these 'things vor4l:d be rtnreasonable and wrong, but it 18 not -equally so the propo- sition to vote all the good men who are in the liquor business out of it, In 'orcer`\to get i'*d of the badmen who are in the business? The Inspectors and Commissioners are constantly dropping the unde- ,sirablo license holders out at a rate that .as rapidly deducing their number, Let us, enumerate 190100. 01 the things a law -observing hotel -keep` ex and shop -keeper does, He does not open in the -morning until the law says he may, eight IFIe etes,es lin the eve-ning_,,when the law says he must -in villages and townships at ten o'clock, and in towns and cities at eleven o'clock. Often the Cheapest -Always the Best twenty-one years of age, He does not sell' to a known drunkard, He does' not sell to a intoxica- ted person, The -se are not all the things the law -observing liquor dealer -serup- ulously-does, but enough has been mentioned: to indicate to any think ing mind the kind of orderly drink ing place it is possible to have, and the kind the paw says we must have. Let that law, we sue., be rig idlyenforced, for fn our opinion it could not be enforced too rigid- ly. It might not be inadvisable 'to bring pressure to bear upon these Comrnissionere to exercise every precaution in their power to avoid granting licenses to any but those who will keep :strictly to the law; and if a holder, of a license breaks the 'law his tenure of his license ought ' to I be seriously imperilled, if not forfeited. It is unneceeeary so indulge in speculation as to what prohibition does for a conmiunity. Many pla- ces have fairly tried it and turned from it. Other places are still giv ing it a fair trial. The people, of this County want to know the truth about it. As an earnest of our good faith, eve suggest that the advocates of the Scott Act name a gentleman and this Asso- eiation name one, and that the two sit certain places agreed upon and make a quiet investigation of conditions, the results of which will be published over their sig- natures in the press{, for the bene- fit of the voters in this, County, and thus in some -degree at least as- sist them in making up their minds as to how 'they should cash !their' votes.
