- '1145 REFORMATION.
1 feel it wrong to stroll along
The idle path of pleasure
And wish to say that I today
Renounce: a life of leisure.
My mind's made up, and I will sup
On dainty fare no longer,
Stat have instead a crust of bread
(This coffee should be stronger).
Expensive dress spells wickedness;
I've come to that decision.
I7l Wear a sack or something Wank
(My new pinlr frock's a vision).
Through rain and snow; though Winds
may, blow
And roads be rough and hely,
I^71 take my way from day to day
(Please shut' the door; 'tis slimy)_
Thus on T'll tread with fitted head
And footsteps brave and steady,
For luxury is wrong, I see
(Goodbyl My oar's ready.
so we must part). When do I start
My pilgrimage of sorrow?
Oil, wen, it's late!" I think I'll wait

The Irohy of Fate.
'Pa, what's the irony of fate?"
"I'll try to explain it as well as I
can. I once had a strong desire to
save up something for a rainy day. I
denied myself many pleasures so that
I might put by a little from time to
time, and at last I had quite a neat
little pile."
"What happened then?"
"One eight your mother became pos-
sessed of a foolish idea that she smell-
ed. smoke, and when she stuck her
head out of the window one of our
neighbors turned in an alarm. The
department quickly responded, and be-
fore I could get my trousers on they
had knocked a bole in the roof and ab-
solutely ruined everything I had saved
up for the rainy day by pouring water
on it," -Chicago Record -Herald.
A LIFE FOR A .LIFE.
Cheerful New Guinea Custom Which
Causes Frequent Murders.
Everywhere in New Guinea the
trayeler is continually brought face to
face with death, and the natives are
devoid of the slightest pity or respect
for the dead or dying, although after
a death they will o:Cteu wall and
mourn 00x' a considerable time.
Murder is an everyday occurrence,
and nothing could be worse than the
morals of the natives. In fact, they
have none. They thieve and lie with
a persistence and cunning which are
surprising.
The Papuans have a cheerful cus-
tom which demands a life for a life,
Should any one die at the first oppor-
tunity they kill some one -they are not
very particular whom -to make up for
it. "While we 'were at 1Tumbold
bay," says Professor' Pratt in the Wide
World Magazine, "a Malay died of
dropsy. Ile was the first Malay who
had ever coins to that part and the
