THE BARS ARE GOING
There were 01S5LiquorLicenses issued
by the Ontario Govelnmentin 1875 and
only 1836 in 1912 so said Rev. J. W.
Aikens in the Town Hall last Sunday
afternoon to an audience that filled
the Hall, Local Option' he said was
essentially' a moral question and if the
Clinton people would do their, duty on
eoliir g day the dumber of licenses
would be still further reduced. Mr.
Aikens has ..been travelling
all over
Grande for 3 years and tolhow the
cause of temperance was growing, in
popularity every p t\ in Province. Hotels
he said would be better conducted
without the bar rooms and quoted one
traveller saying
as sa rn of the 51 towns he
g
did business in 88 were under Local
Option and on no case was accomoda
tion worse than under license, and in
nearly every case it was. Netter. One
Hotel -in Vancouver where he had
stopped claimed to have made $50,000
last year and had no bar in connec-
tion. Who ever heard of a farm being
advertised as being a few miles from a
par -room, but von would often see a
farm advertised as being ,within one
or two miles of a Church or school.
The fact is he said the bar room is
the common enemy of the Church, the
Home and • the school and in every
case stands for self indulgence. He
said he never met a man in the rum
husinese, but who was too good for
the business. and he laid the blame
for the mean being in the business at
the door of every voter and stated
that on his opinion that a man who
would vote to keep open the bar room
ought to be ashamed to look a boy in
the face He lamented the fact that
a great many of the Country's best
men bad gone down by the liquor
tante and Strongly urged .e cry t 1 v voter
to vote for the abolition of the traffic
by the only method available and that
was Loual- .Option,, He said are 130
arguments for you, as be pointed to 30
bright looking boys in the front seats
