SU'ESS
The electors of •Clinton in 11910 voted on a Local Option By-law, securing_
a majority of 62 for the by-law, the exact figures being 322 for, 2001 against,
short of the iiecessai 60 per cent of the votes
9
faillug a few votes, however,•
cast, and now, after three years, angther opportunity is offereI the electors of
again, expressing their disapproval -of ° the license system. Local ` Option has
most satisfactorily advanced the 'temperance cause throughout the Province and
at present not the bar alone but the ;whole busigess of dispensing ,.alcohol=
liquor is being rapidly : abolished: by the progress of Local Option. Of the 828
municipalities in Ontario 463 are under Local Option or no License. Both politi-
cal parties areagreed asto the evils of the traffic and the necessity of ,curtail-
ing it,and whatever the future may contain for us Local Option is admitted to
be;: the hest available temperance measure.

Local Option Helps Business
When Money is plentiful; business is good(
If Money is scarce, business is dull.
If scarce in some homes, business is affected
'L'he Bar roam makes money scarce in many homes and there
fore injures Cosiness.
Jiecause the mousy is spent over the bar many homes do
without what otherwise they would have,
The Bar room means arlrain on this community of Thousands
01 Dollars. •
The Galt men say that those who have been the victims of
drunknees in Galt under Local Option are in almost if not every
case, men who became addicted to drink when they had the open
bar under the license system•
Mr, W. 11. S, Cane of Newmarket is the authority for saying
that under Local Option for three years Newni iiket has not suffered
as conrparect with the lieense town of Aurora just 5 miles distant
and connected by electric railway, but rather the, line of separa•
tion between the two towns bad moved furtheraway and farmers
who formerly went to Aurora are now coming to Newmarket.
Other places find it a good thin to be re-
lieved of' the bar. Why notClinton
1I' the total ilieoIue from Licenses had to be
secured by direct taxation. the amount would not
be over l mills, or on amount of $100 about 69c
To obtain as its share of license (ce $900, Clinton
submits to a drain of perhaps oyer $25,000
Strathroy 'in Love With
Local Option, :
Ingersoll, Dec. 29—Conditions that have existed in thetown
of Strathroy under Docai Option were described in a strong address
by Mr. J.W. Oameron, ex -mayor of that town, at a largely attended
temperance meeting in the Salvation Army barracks this afternoon.
Mr. Cameron spoke plainly, citing hie own opposition to Local
Option four: years ago, and of how the measure won bis support
until he was an enthusiastic advocate. He bad come out publicly
in favor of the measure some three months ago, when steps were
taken for a repeal contest. Mr. Cameron, who is a manufacturer,
xpressed thee opinion that his interests in Strathroy would mot
permit him to jeopardize them by the re opening of the bar, All the
manufeclurere of the town, he said. were out in favor. of Local
Option. Imelda connection he told of the difficulty that.manufac-
turers have with their'men following pay : day nnaer the licensed
system. The speaker also refuted a number of arguwente of oppo.
Hants to Local Option, and stated that farmers were not the people
who wanted:licensed bore. as in rural districts these had al-
ready been abolished,—Free Press. London.

Bars Closed for First Time
on Zhristmat-_
„e.
The amendment to the Liquor License Act, necessitating the
closing of hotel bars on Christmas Day, carried out yesterday for
the first time, (-treated a marked difference in London. Seven persous
only, lodged in the cells on Christmas Eve, presenting ample evi-
dence of excessive celebration, faced Magistrate Judd on Christmas
moaning. Three were discharged. The others were remanded until
this morning. From that period on the officers at the Carling street
station had no reason to complain of being overexerted. Not a blow'
was struck, and as the day slipped quietiy by, as Christmas should,
the effect of the new amendment was easily noticed. Up to early
this morning not an,ihtoxicated person had been arrested, and
Christmas Day, 19I2, had gone on record as the quietest and most
favorable holiday in police circles for years.—Free Press, London.'
'Lampton County Council
Favors Local Option.
Sarnia, Dec 11—The Lampton County Council- passed the •
•folloceing resolution "Whereas in the report of the House 'of
Refuge Committee, 'which bas been adopted by this council, there
eppears.a statement to the effect that fifty per cent of those persons
in the House of Refuge were placed there on account of intemper-
ance. and whereas these regretable intemperate habits were.created
and fostered by the licensed bar room system, therefore this council
resolves that we regret to see ,licensed in this county so i:u•ge, a
contributing agency to the population of the House of Refuge. and
view with. approval the efforts of those municipalities still under
4icenseto vote it out by adopting Local Option By laws., and that
