OCAL OPTION has proved a failure in Galt as it has in every other place in which it has been, tried. The papers
are full of reports from Local Optionplaces of illegal selling. Bind pigs'. Increasedrun
P P a g - P b',• drunkenness. Bad moral
conditions. Loss of trade.. Increased. taxes, Crime. Again and again foremost citizens, even temperance
workers, declare for the return of properly enforced license id place of present intolerable conditions.
Below is reproduced a copy of a recently signed statement by leading Galt manufacturers. Letters from people
in other places tell an equally strong story.
To WROM;-;T MAY - CONCERN :
We, the undersigned citizens of Galt, beg to state that Local Option
has not proven a protection to boys. It has not decreased drunkenness.
It favours the use of strong liquors in preference to ale, light beer and
wine. It has been the direct cause. of driving thousands of dollars
monthly out of the business channels of Galt, and has given us no moral
benefit in. return. As compared to license, we consider it a' complete failure,

Conventions and Excursion Parties Avoid the Town
There is a bottle brigade here, and many drink from bottles offered them
that never drank before. False swearing is another bad feature. Any one who
wants liquor can easily get it, and a lot of these fellows who preach it get liquor
themselves and go to excess. We have only one butcher now, one left. No
harness shop—he had to pull out. We never have a celebration or anything of
that kind like we used to bane. We used to often have celebrations, con.
vendetta and pieaies,"but they all go to other places now.
M. McAULEY
Southampton, Ont.
Property Deer -,dated -Taxes Increased
Funny thing this Local Option. It was claimed that ff the money was not
s nt in the hotel bare it would be spent in the stores. But this is not true,
The teener does not come. to the town now. it gess to other places. I am
lure we do not get it M formerly. This law increases taxes and depreciates the
value of property, as several parties who have sold out and left the place had to
suffer a loss of about twenty -live per cent. I have lived in this town for over
twenty years, and sun St total abstainer, J. W. BRYANS,
Ex -Reeve and Clerk, Havelock, Ont,
Taxes Higher—No Sale for Property
One feature of Local Option in our town" liquor is being used to a great ex-
tant by boys; effect oe busmen( : hag been bad. " Strange feature of this taw
Is that some of thosethat vote for It, after it has passed and gone tato
force. engage to the Illicitsale of lique,. Taxes are higher and there is no
sale for property. H. BEATTY,
Omemee.
Local Option Bad Everywhere
My business takes me very largely over the eastern part of the Province, and
I find the conditions' very much the Game in all Local Option towns. The law
Is bad for business, destroys the accommodation for the travelling public,
drives money out of town and 18 a curse to the young men, as they use liquor
more freely than ever.
S. RICEIARDSON,
Millbrook.
Vacant Stores and Houses Everywhere '
Local Option has been a. bad thing for this town. Lots of men get drunk;
I believe there is more drinking now than before. Business Is not by any
means as good as before Local Option came in force. There are loth
of vacant".houses and soma vacant stores. There is no sale' for property in
Durham.
- HUGH McDONALD,
Durham,:
Has Tended to Promote lawlessness
"The Law in my opinion is not a succeed. It is not effective as a remedy for
the evils et which it aimed. It has tended to promote lawleasne■s and dis-
regard of taw. It encourages secret, ilriniting on the part of roan$ lees.
and is detrimental to the Wetness into is of the village.
F. C. COWEY,
Colborne, Ont.
License System more Desirable
Local Option has mode our municipality much more lawless than under
the License Act. New we have to contend with illicit sale ofvile whiskey.
Truly the License sratem Is more desirable than this miserable condition.
THOS. H. OHEER,
Brighton.
Whiskey Train Does Flourishing Business
I never kept liquor in my house until this law came and I have used more
of it in the last, year than I have used in all my life before. Tribe greatest
temperance people in this town keep liquor to their houses, and es It
3s now there is more temptation to the young people than ever before.
1
There is more common canoe in being able to go and buy a glass of ale than
keeping a supply in the house se we have to do now. W'e habe now what is
called the Whaskey Train to this place every night, and there is lots of liquor.

Too Much New Year Feasting In
Montreal, Says Bruchesi.
MONTREAL, Dec. 30.—In the oourse
of a circular letter addressed to .the
local Catholic clergy and read at all
the ' masses in the various local
t;hurch yesterday., His Grace Arch-
bishopeBruchesi denounced the de-
plorable excesses which, he said, had
marked the feasting in local hotels,
incident to seeing the old year out
and the new year in.
Incertain instances the' partici-
pants io these New Year's banquets
had forgotten themselves to a dis-
gracefuI 'extent. Such feastings had
about them anything but a Christian'
character, said his grace, and Cattle
-
lees should• not figure in them.
