CHARGED WITH LIBEL.
Dr. Howitt.Takes Action Against His
• Accusers at Guelph.
• GUELPH, Dec. 30. -Dr. IL 0. Hew-
itt, medical health Officer of Guelph,
has taken action for criminal libbl
• against the twenty-two petitioners
' who signed their names to the charges
age4nst him recently presented to the
City Council. It now proves that there
• was no intention of making charges
• against Dr. Howitt, but that his office
, was included in the petition through
a legal error. • ,
• W. H. Robinson, who takes upon• '
himself the responsibility of the whole
affair, has made, the following state-
• clients to .the newspapers of this city,
marl is self-explanatory; I wish to
state that the reference to the medical
health officer in the petition to the
council in the matter of the office of
the sanitary inspector, was an inad-
vertence in the office of my selicitor.
There wasn't any intention of refer-
ring to Dr. H. 0. Howitt, and my
solicitors haveWritten him a letter of
apology, and that I have nothing but
the greatest of praise for his public
services. I wish further to state in
the interest of those whose names are
,on the requisition asking for an inves-
tigation, that 1, W. H. Robinson, will
assume all fina-neiae responsibility;
and that they will not be put to one
cent of expense. Yours respectfully,
W. Hi Robinson."
Three of the petitioners have ex-
pressed a desire to have their names
struck off, as they were not under the
impression that they were making any,
charges, but merely asking for an in-
vestigation. The ease will likely be
heard before Police Magistrate Saun-
ders on Tuesday.
A meeting of the pollee commission-
ers was held Saturday. They discuss-
ed the charges that had been made
before the City Council on Thursday
night, wherein the chief of police was
charged with certain offences: They
were strongly of the opinion that any
charges should be presented to the
connnission, when they' would be only
too glad to go fully into them. If the
ditizens 'were not satisfied with this,
they could appeal to a higher author-
ity and have the whole matter thor-
eughly investigated. -ereseeleae.,

BROKE THROUGH ME.
Little Lad Drowns and Heroic Brother
Also Loses Life.
BROCKVILLE, Dec. 30. -At Oardi-
nal Village Friday the two sons of
William Dodge were sleighing near the
residence of their parents on the bank
of the old canal, when Ray, aged four
years, in descending the steep incline,
was denied over and upon the ice.
He went through and was drowned,
and his brother Gordon, aged ,11, in
an heroic attempt at rescue, also lost
his life. The body crf the younger lad
floated because of. being attached to
the rope of the sleigh, while the body
of his brother was found in four and
one-half feet of water. •
The lads were not missed until the
mother went to call them for dinner.
They were nowhere to be seen but
their toques were floating in an open-
ing in the ice, and gave the first clue
to the tragedy. They had then been
• in the water half an hour and life was
extinct.

A HE t BACHE.
• Headache le not a &ease in itself, but
is often a source of great suffering, and its
presence is likely symptomatic of some
diseage lurking in the system.
To get rid of the headache, and thus
prevent more serious troubles, it is
absolutely necessary to cleanse the
system of all waste and poisonous matter,
and keep the botels well open, the
clogging of the bowels being one of the
principle causes of headache. Burdeck
Blood Bitters regulates the bowels, and
makes their movement free and natural.
A cure for headache* a medicine that
cures where others fail'.

writes: -"Several years ago I • was a
constant sufferer from headache. I was
all run down, and nothing seemed to do
me any good. I re td of Burdock Blood
Bitters, and decided to give it a trial.
The result was marvellous, the headache
stopped entirely, and I feel better in
every way. I can safely recommend
