Six Years in Peniten*
nary.
The fall assizes are in progress in
tGoderich,rthis week with Mr. Justice.
,Britton presiding. .
The principal case is that of Gor-
don, -the. 1V1eKillop young man chug -
ed with, killing his father, Hugh dor-
orlon, by strikiog him over the head
in Aprillast with an iron nor.
Judge, Britton particularly 'point-
ed out to the grand jurymen that it
was no pert of their duties to alter,
the charge from murder to man-
slaughter.
"Present the bill ad made by the
crown officer for your convenience,"
he instructed, "becaose, if it should
be brought out before the petit jury
that the charge should be lessened,
the jury and judge can do that ;
Whereas, there is no way of enlarg-
ing the, offense through the . petit
jury."
-The grand jury : William Hartry,
of Seaforth, foreman ; John Adams
of Wroxeter ; Albert Brigham of Hul-
lett ; Wnr. Bowman of Morris town-
ship ; Wm. Carter of Mullett town-
ship ; John Darroch of I,akelet ;

Goderich, Nov. 26.—Six years in
Kingston Penitentiary was the sen -
4.r tenee passed upon Robert Gordon at
' the Huron County 'Assizes this morn-
ing for the killing of his father,
Hugh Gordon, a well-known farmer
of the Township of McKillop. On the
23rd of April last 'the Grand Jury
brought • in a true bill for Murder,
but by agreement between the
Crown Prosecutor, Mr, Dudley Hol-
mes of Wingham and counsel for the
prisoner, the indictment, was changed
to manslaughter and the prisoner
pleaded guilty.
Mr. W. Proudfoot on behalf of the
• prisoner, related the facts and cir-
cumstances of the unfortunate affair,
and pleaded for a lenient judgment
especially as the health of the pris-
oner is not 'robust. Judge Britton
then passed sentence.
'• Robert Gordonandhis father, Hugh
Gordon, had been plowing on their
farm on' the day of the tragedy, and
on driving his team into the barn
the younger Gordon struck one of
'the horses with a strap. This anger-
ed 'the father, who rushed at -the son
and the latter picked up an iron bar
arid dealt his father a fatal blow on
the head. An aunt and two sis-
ters of the young man are left en
the farm without a male relative.
Relations 'between the father and son
had been quite. amicable, and the
. family is highly respected.
