Buddha and Confucius Declare' that It Comes From
Virtuous Thoughts and Actions
'OL'OP3 01 =a good mile are

xax'vii, 23
The' supreme end sug1st in all,
'religious devotion is the attainment
of happiness. It matters little
what may be the particular form in
which religious intuitione are
wrought out; the desired, end in
every case as that man may on
gladness, joy and peece.
From the earliest times, in this
human quest, it has been discov-
ered that ,there is an exceedingly
intimate relationship between -hap-
piness and goodness. Buddha
based lois entire religious system .on
this, "that peace and rest are the
result ofvirtuous thoughts and
acts." Confucius reached the cul-
miriation of -his reasoning when 'he
said; "Virtue is more to man than
either fire or water; 1 have never
seen a man die from treading the
course of virtue." Christianity, in
turn, fiELIS

The Highest Development
of the thought when it implores its
followers "to Walk sworthy of the
Lord to all pleasing, being fruitful
in every giSoca voark."
The destiny of the family, of so-
ciety., and of the -State is wrapped
up in the measure with which men
shall succeed In becoming righte-
eus: These ethical units shall 'be-
come entirely regenerate only 'when
the individual 'units of mankind
shall have acquired "the habit of
being good." The realization of
this hypothesis is eot a problem in
ethics, but rat mperative of
religion.
If happiness dep'ends upon vir-
tue,, how, then, shall a troan be
virtuous? In their answers to flue
question the religious systems of
antiquity have been lost in their
own wreckage. They have discov-
ered the ideal, but missed the dy-
namic ,through which alone 'the'
ideel may be attained.
"The steps of a good man are
established by the Lord." Human
nature is not innately good. The
desire to do right may be from
within; the power which makes for
righteousness .rnust be from with -
chit, •
. Always From Above.
"The heart is 4)eeeitful above all
things and desperately awickesl."
The gift of goodness is the gift of
-God. What I cannot do of myself,
me Master • greets me of His
strength to do: That which is sea -
did he makes to be holy. He estab-
lishes my every footstep, so that
the arid desert of my soul area:iota-

sires and mine are one. Since His
power has seaured heppinese for
me, I go forth 'hravelyato issi'oit in
the working out of His purposes
which shall bring happiness to the
world. ' •
The searchers of all the agee can

quest, ,pettee and rest and gladness

is one -Rather, the 'dreams of

vision is explained iii verse 32.
What God is about to do he hath
declared unto -Pharaoh-In these
-words lies the message which the
writer of the narrative meant to
convey to the reader. Not all
dreams have .significance in rela-
tion to future events in the dream-

of the soul, by meas .of which it
reaches outsinto the mysteries of its
environment and forsvard into the
shrouded horiz-on 01 the future, are
eeal and of such a nature as to per-
mit their being ,brought to consci-
ousness when the mind is at rest
from the crowding interests oa its
waking hours. Such intuitions may
not seldom he veiled in the form of
dreams, the meaning of which' at
the time is not clear.
