B. Morphy, N. C:, M. P., of Listowel, asked for an official ex- planation fon the public's informa- tion, and received the following thorough article 'on the subject from Chief, Astronomers Ding, of the DominionAstronomical Obser- vatory, which he has allowed to be reproduced; Dear Mr, 11orphy,-Referring to the subject of our recent conver- sation S would explain that• the towers mentioned are triangula- tion stations of the Geodetic Sur- vey. That method of this survey poll - sists in the selection of points at a considerable distance apart, visi- ble from one another. Thus the country is covered by a network of triangles, the angles of which are then measured with theodolites The length of one triangle side•is measured on the ground with spe- cial ,apparatus with the highest ac- curacy attainable. From !his length, using the measured angles of the triangles, the lengths of all the other lines in the network are calculated by trigonometry. Astro- nomical observations to determine the latitude and longitude of one point and the direction of one side are sufficient to give the latitudes and. longitudes of all points and the directions of all sides, though in order to limit the accumulation of the unavoidable small errors, ad ditional astronomical stations are intro•duied at suitable intervals, as Well as check base line measure- ments. • LThe points thus determined are to serve as basal points for local surveys of alBering or cl kinds, such as engin e a I addstra surveys, Y , but especially, topographic surveys for mapping' the country. For these purposes it is not necessary that ( the point be close together, as it is easy to introduce necessary secondary reference points be- tween the primary stations. On the coetrary it is an advan- age from the pointf of view of eethe Geodetid Survey itself to or I have them far apart for the sake of in l both the greater precision and the saving of cost by avoiding multipii Moltenzie In Tuckersnrith on.
