Lesson VII. -Fourth Quarter, For
Nov. 15, 1914.
THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES.
Text of the Lesson, Mark xiv, 53, 54,66-
-
72 -Memory Verses, 71, 72—Golden
Text, 1 Cor. x, 12—Commentary, Pre-
pared by Rev. D. M.Stearns.
A few weeks ago we saw in the
story of Jesus Christ and Judas Iscari-
ot, God and the devil face to face; now
we have the same Lord Jesus in the
hands of His enemies and the strange
conduct, or, rather, misconduct, of one
of His most favored disciples. All who
are not saved are lost, but He came
to seek and to save the lost, When
any lost one is convinced of sin and
truly receives the Lord Jesus Christ
they become saved ones, and all such.
are equally saved; no one is more saved
than another, for all have the same
Saviour and the same salvation. But
the experience of such as are saved Is
very varied. and the rewards will be
according to service.
Some follow fully as did Caleb and
Joshua. while some follow afar off like
Peter fn' this lesson. Some utterly re-
nounce the world, the flesh end the
devil, while some are more or less com
formed to this present evil age.
Some have no confidence in self mnn.
lean wholly upon the Lord, but others
are too often self eon8dent as pant,

was when he said, "I will lay down my
life for Thy sake" (John silt, 37).
When the band of soldier's took Jesus
and led Him away Peter followed Him
afar 'off, . even unto the palace. of tho
high priest,'•and sat 'with the;eervants
and warmed himself at the fire (verses.
53,' 54). The record' in. John:,melt, .I6
18, I's that Peter and John both follow-
ed Jesus, but John being known to the
high priest went into the palace, • but .
Peter stood at 'the door witbout until
John spoke unto her that kept the door
and brought in Peter.
There is growth in grace and in the
knowledge of oar • Lord and Savloiit
Jesus Cbrist, a :blessed experience,'of
Which' Peter speaks 1n the last'veree
of his second epistle (II - Pet. 114! 18).
There is also''a pbeesibllity of a growinir
departure from the Lord, even' in 'the
tees OUR saved person, and that • the
slaved one enter .the kingdom saved es
by fire a (aor. 111, 15; v, 5)'; but accord-
ing to the words of tho Lord, Jesus Wm
self it •is impossible that a Saved one
Should' ever' perish. (John s, 28).
Peter's downward steps as a disciple
Mem to have been his Self confidence
and consequent blundering, his follow
Ing afar instead of fully, his sitting in
the company of the servants and warn-
ing himself at their fire, followed by
hie profanity and base denial. Earlier
in the record we hear Peter advising
the Lord not to speak of suffering, but
rather to pity Himself; on which occa-
sion he was 'told that it was Satan
speaking through him and that he sa-
vored of men rather than God (Matt.
xvi, 22, 23). On this occasion he was
again in the hands of Satan to be sift-
ed, but our Lord had prayed for him
(Luke axil, 31-34). Peter learned by
bitter experience something of the wile°
of the devil and therefore could write
all the more forcefully "Be. sober,be
vigilant, because your adversary, the
devil, as a roaring Iron, walketh about
seeking whom he may devour, whom
resist steadfast in the faith" (I Pet. v,
8, 9).
The true Christian life is the "Not I,
but Christ," "Not I,' but the grace of
God" attitude. No confidence in the
flesh, but rejoicing In Christ Jesus (Gal.
11 20; I Cor. xv, 10; PhIL i11, 3). The
company of the ungodly is no place for
a child of God, and It is not for us to
walk or ritand or sit with them. • We
do not need the warmth of their fire;
but by meditation on the word of God
may have Cinch a fire in us as the dis-
ciples had with whom the Lord walked
to Emmaus (Ps. i, 1, 2; =ix, 8; Luke
xxiv, 32). Unbelievers have a great
many warming up places, such as the
'theater, the dance, the card table, and
too often those who profess to be
Christians, and perhaps are, may be
found in such company and yet'do not
hesitate to sing, "Thou, 0 Christ, art
all I want, more than all in Thee I'
find."
We should be careful to sing the truth
as well as speak the truth, for only as
we do this is it real worship.
That Peter stkould be ashamed or
afraid to. confess Christ before these
servants seems pitiful indeed. I judge
from his cursing and swearing that he
was probably given to profanity 'before
he began to follow Jesus, and this was
a sudden outbreak of the old nature
which remains in us as long as we stay
In these mortal bodies and concerning
whichwe are said to be always deliv-
ered unto death (II Cor. iv,. 10, 11;
Rom. vi, 11). What a look of love and
pity and sorrow it must have been that
Jesus gave to Peter and which sent him
out to weep bitterly, for .he was .evi-
dently where Jesus, could see him (Luke
xxii, 61, 62).
It would be well for us 1f we would
I lways remember that those same eyes
are .ever upon us, searching us through
and through, and live by the well of
Him that liveth' and seeth me (II Cor.
xvi, 9; Gen. xvi; 13, 14, margin). Con..
treat this same Peter, spirit tilled, in
the presence of the high priest and
the council, bold as a lion (Acts iv, 5.13,
19, 20), and let us be so filled.
Any fear of man is an indication that
the Spirit is not for 'the time being
controlling us. The fear of man bring-
eth'a snare, bnt•in the fear of the Lord

WHY, NOT?,
Why .couldn't a newspaper dis-
cuss the mayoralty contest the
same way as the British war censor
discuss the war.
It would run something like this;
"There are four 'candidates for
mayor this year. Mr. --is not fit
for the position. He's a scoundrel
and is not deserving of public con_
fidence. He voted for-- • which
measure was a decided • advantage
to--. As 'fares the others are
concerned, they ,are not' worthy of
note. One of them is known as
a dead beat and a good for nothing
while it is known that --, who
lives on street, has formany
years beaten his wife., The last
man of the four, Mr:-- is worse
than all the other three put to-
gether. In fact --told us that
were the truth about --- 1. to be
printed, he would be tarred and •
feathered. What's more, -- wife
dresses far, beyond her means and
it's common talk that has
credit been refused c1e i at the corner
.grocery ,store."
Sure —this method of substitut-
ing blanks for names would pro
yoke free and easy .discussion.
An eminent scientist the other
day, gave his • opinion that the
most wonderful discovery, of recent
years was the discovery of Zam
Buka Just think'! As soon as a
single thin Layer, of Zam-Buk' is
applied to a wound or a sore, such
injury is insured against blood
poison l Not one species • `,of mi-
crobe has been found that Zam-
Buk does not kill i
Then again. As soon as ' Zam-
Buk is applied to a sore,, or a cut
or to skin disease, it stops the
smarting. That is why children
are such friend of Zam-Buk. They
care nothing for the etlience of the
thing. All they know is that Zam
Buk stops their; pain. 1Mothere
should never forget this.
Again. As soon as Zam-Buk is
applied to a wound or to a dis-
eased part, the cell's beneath the
skin's surface are so stimulated
that new healthy tissue is quickly
formed. This forming of fresh
healthy tissue from below is Zam-
Buk's secret of healing. The tis-
sue thus formed is worked up to
the surface and literally casts off
the diseased tissue above it. This
is why Zam-Buk cures are perman
ent.
Only the other day Mr. Marsh,
of 101 Delorimier Ave., Montreal
called upon the Zam-Buk Co. and
told them that for 'over twenty-
five years he had been a martyr
to eczema. His hands were at one
time so covered with sores that he
had to sleep in gloves. Four years
ago Zam-Buk was introduced to
him, and in a few months it cured
him. Today -oyer three ;years
after his cure of a disease he had
bad ' for twenty five years—he is
still cured and has had no trace
of any return of the eczema.

alarmed me. I was under doctor's
treatment for a long time,. but
with no benefit. A friend sug-
gested Dr, Williams Pink Pills and
I decided to try them, In about
a month I felt much better and
by the time I had taken another
four boxes I was in the best of
health and able to eat all kinds
of nourishing food. It is now
several years since I was cured
and I have never felt a symptom
of indigestion since. I take every
opportunity of recommending Dr,
Virilliams' Pink Pills to friends who
are ailing."
If your dealer does not keep
these Pills you can get them by
mail at 50 cents a box or six
boxes for $2.50 from Thel.atm Wil-
