Memory Verses, 34 -36 -Golden Text, Matt. xxvi, 41 -Commentary Prepared by Rev. D. M. Stearns. Wholly forgetful of Himself and His. approaching sufferings, In a way that we cannot understand, He comforted that little band with the incomparable words of John sin, xv, xvi and pray- ed the prayer of John xvii, such a prayer as was never prayed on earth before or since. Then they sang a hymn and went out into the mount of Olives (verse 26). He went forth over the brook Cedl on, because His, son Israel had turned against Him and would not have Him (Ex. iv, 22; Pe. 1sxxl..11). We 'going but think of Hist father David going forth over the same brook because his son rebelled against him (II Sam. xv, 28), but as truly as :David returned and' reigned when the rebellion was over, so shall the Son of David return and reign when Israel's rebellion Is over. Having entered a garden in Geth- semane (John xviil, 1), He said to His disciples, "Sit ye here while I shall pray,' and, leaving eight of theta, He took Peter and James and John and went a little farther end beran to 9e The Best Feed for, Fattening the Stock -Scientific Feeding. Putting the three rec- ords together as well as we ' can, it :seems tp have been, like this: Lie was withdrawn from the three favored dis. elples about' a stone's cast' saying 'to' them,. "My soul Is exceeding sorrow- ful unto death. Tarry ye here and watch with me." Then He went for- ward a little and kneeled down and fell on IIis face on the ground ,and prayed, saying. "0 my Father. if it be possible let this, cup puss from me: 'nevertheless. not my will but Thine be done." And there appeared an angel unto aim from heaven, strengthening Him. And. being in an agony, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat • was as it were great drops of blood fallingdown to the' ground. (Matt. xxvi; 37-39; Mark xiv, 33-36; Luke till, 41.49. ) Then He came to the three and found them asleep and saith unto Peter,: "Si- mon, steepest thou? Couldest thou not 'watch with me one hour? Watch ye and pray lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." He went away the sec- ond time and prayed the same words, and returned and found them asleep again, and they did not know what to answer Him. He went away and prayed the third time, saying the came words. Then. Re came the third time to the three and said, "Sleep on now, and take your rest, It is enough, the hour is come; behold,. the Son of Man b betrayed into the hands of sinners." Then He returned to the eight and found them alsosleeping for sorrow, and said; *Why sleep ye? Rise and pray lest Ye enter into temptation." This at- tempt at a conservative story of that awful night in the garden may not be spite correct in every detail, but it is helpful even to try to do it. Do it for yourself, and you will be blessed is doing' it. It is clear that He prayed three times, that He found them three timed sleeping, that He sweat, as it were, drops of blood, that an angel strength- ened trengthened Him, that after His agony He was able to rise up and go to meet Hie; enemies. What shall we say of the favored three who were also with Him at the raising of the ruler's daughter and on the mount of transfiguration and two of them 'honored to bring to Him the ass' colt and to prepare the Passover? What about their sleeping at His transfiguration (Enke ix, 82), as well as in ,the garden, and the fact that neither glory nor suffering can keep such mortals as we are awake? What about theboasting, of Peter and then his not being able to watch one hour? Ob, the loneliness of it all on 'His side! "No man knoweth the Son save the Father." How can He continue to love such as we are and ever hope to make anything out of us? May His patience with us make us more pa- tient with each other. As to His own experience in the garden we may be quite certain that He was not shrinking from death on tie cross, nor was He asking to be de- livered from that We know that the devil tried to kill Him as a ba -be in Bethlehem and by His own townsmen at, Nazareth: and possibly in the storm on the lake, but he could not, for the time had not come. My own conic. tion concerning His agony and bloody sweat. in Gethsemane is that it was an- other attempt of the devil to kill Him before the time and thus prevent His great sacrifice for sin on Calvary. The key to it is found in Heb. r, 7, "He offered . up' prayers and supplications with ' strong crying and tears -Hato Him' that was able to save Himfrom death and was beard." It is the rev- ord of His third weeping. He prayed to .be saved from death, and He was heard and therefore saved from death, the death in the garden which seem- ed imminent in angel eame to Him and strengthened Him that 'He might go on to the cross and finish the great I atonement for sin which He came to make. Yet He was willing to leaven • Hie work unfinished and die in the garden 1f His Father should so Will it. Is often an illumination as big as the sun. The premier stated last right that the date of this world b,, decided probably to day after the new cabinet was sworn in and thus properly consti tuted to transact business. The writs for the other bye -elections that is, in West [amilton brought about. by Col. Hendrie's appoint- ment and in Dundas, to choose a representative in place of Sir James Whitney, . have not been thought of in the present circumstances and may not be taken up until later. Finley G. Macdiarmid, member for West Elgin, is the only new fig- ure in the cabinet and takes the portfolio of Public. Works in suc- cession to Hon. Dr. Reaume. The most important change noted is the omission of Sir Adam Beck as Minister without port- folio, although he will still remain as Chairman of the Hydro -Electric Power Commission. Hon I. B. Lu- res stepping in as the representa- tive of the Executive ,Council. In explaining this ,circumstance, Hon. Mr. Hearst said last night; For a long time Sir Adam has wished to devote his whole time to the .work of the Hydro -Electric Power Com 'mission and at his own wish had been left out of the Cabinet' al- though, as a matter of fact, the old Cabinet dissolved." Dropping of Sir Adam Beck The omission of Sir Adam Beck however is charged with this signi licence and was the subject of much comment last night; it stamps the new minister as having distinct corporation sympathies. In the discussion that has taken place over the political situation these last few days principally since Hon'. Frank Cochrane was re ported to be influencing the choice of Mr. Hearst as Sir James Whit ney's successor, and the fact that he was instrumental in having Hon, J. S, Hendrie, selected as next Lieutenant Governor, it has been openly suggested by Conservative papers that Mr. Hearst's nomina- tion was suggested at the instance of the party organization. This would now seem to be, the situa tion that developed. The choice' Constipation tion Vanishes -oreve r Prompt ilnd.-.'erinweatt One CARTER'S LiTTLsLIVIRPIU.S neveable--se only.
