Temperance Issue
is Carly Drawn
Opinion of the Christian Guardian
on Coming Elections.
Toronto, May 15,44regarc1' to
the temperance issue ',tithe impend
ing Ontario general elections, the
Christina Guardian in its current
issue'says; •
"As we understam(d the question
the issue between the two political
parties upon the point is very clear
ly drawn. Tho Conservative party
stands for taw enforcement and the
further use of the local option pm -
provision in the Liquor License Act
but they do not believe `+:d, and will
not gran)!, any radical tempersnce
legislation unless -compelled to do
so by .d.ecisive vote of the people
The reform party stands clearly
and clefilnately for the immediate
abolition of all bar Wd: club licen-
ses, • leaving all the prese.rtt shop
licenses intact, but to be dealt with
by local vote, a majority of voters
to rule either fol• or against the
license, , Now this isnot all temper-
ance people have been asking for
and itis not all that the Provincial
Legislature could do in the matter
but itdoes include two very im-
portant denhanids Ontario temper-
ance men have been quaking fon a
decade or more. Under such eir-
cumstances the ni.an who puts tem-
perance before party 'seems to us
to have a pretty clear course mark-
ed(out as to how his vote should
be cast.Mr
". Bowell's policy with refer-
ence to the liquor question should
appeal strongly to every temper-
ance man, not because it is Mr. Row
ell's policy, but because, so far as
it goes, it represents the temper-
ance politey of Ontario for years
past, To reprobate this policy now
would seeem to come dangerously
near to.de.:laring previous declara-
tions insincere„ We would not try
to be a conscience for any man, but
as the matter looks to us in a
straight contest between aConser-
vative who stands by his party
policy on the liquor question and
aReformer who stands by his party
policy on the same issue, the ardent
anti honest temperance voter does
not seem to have much ground: to
hesitate."
