Dear Elsa -1 bave just been talking

she does and saye and has aucl is so

Always to feel contented with one-
self must indeed be a pleasant sensa-

surely is an affliction for the rest of
reenkind.
Now, deer, don't misunderstand me
and jump to the conclusion that I coii.

But I do think a coital') amount of
worldly assurance the best asset in
this life, It makes a person more
agreeable, more sought after and more

was told to me recently, a voice that
could not be bought for gold. It be-

a chambermaid in a great house, whose
speaking voice was so wonderfully
sweet. as to provoke comment by all
who heard her talk.
Her mistrees particularly admired. 1

girl to come and speak to the teacher

teach my daughter to speak like that."

sadly, "that Is impossible. No man

PERILOUS HUGGING.
The Embrace of a Kangaroo Does Not
Leave Pleasant Memories.
Notwithstanding the kangaroo's pop-
ular reputation for speed, he is easily
overtaken in the bush by n good horse
(they say) within half a mile. A ca-
pable kangaroo dog -a lean, swift
beast, a cross between a greyhound
and a mastiff, bred to (nurse and kill -
soon runs him to bay. Without dogs
it is the custom to kill with a cudgel.
This is often accomplished by the
sportsman from the back of his horse.
Dismountee, however, with the kanga-
roo waitiug alertly for :Muck, it is
sometimes a perilous venture to come
to close quarters. A 51111, and the
sportsman finds himself at once in a
desperate si tun don.
One of the lumberineks with WhOrn
we rested In the shade of the blackbutt
showed us the scars or an encounter.
Ele had ridden the kangaroo down,
said be, and, being in linete to make
OU end of the sport, he had caught up
the first likely stick his eye could dis-
cover and he bad stepped quiekly and
conadently in, and Lie had struck hard
and necuratelr. And the next instant,
caught off the ground, lie WS strug-
gling breast to breast In the hug of
the creature, frightfully aware that he
must escape before the deadly hind
foot had clevastnted him.
"Aly club broke," he exclaimed, "and
the boomer got me!"
There were long semi on his back
find shoulders, the which we were not
very sorry to see, for we could not
make out why any mini should wish to
kill a kangaroo for sport -Norman
