The result of the vote on Canada
Temperance Act runs a great surprise
to everybody, Nearly all expected the
act to pass, but never dreamed of such
a ma,jorii y. The temperance workers
•u•e overjoyed and think that the antis
helped their- cause by irnportiog such
talent as Durand and Wimble.

an overwhelming, majority, and in
Peal and Welland by small major-
ities', such as would have failed to
carry it if the Ontario three fifths
law had been in force. The Scott

36 years old, a piece of heavy ar-
tillery of which the temperance
men have not made mulch use in
rfecent years. It covers' a much.
larger area in a single vote, than
the Ontario local option law and
the result is that towns which op -
poste it may be made "dry" by the
vote of rural parts of the county.
Thus Welland carries the by-law,
