From the London Advertiser we we clip the following obituary no- tice' of an uncle of Mrs' (Dr.) Axon of town; -Dr Jalzies Drysdale Bal- four, 333 Princes's avenue, aformer super•initiendent of Victoria Hospi- tal, and one of London's oldest. physicians, died early Wednesday morning of pneumonia. 'He had been ill since Saturday night, and n -as unconscious for more than 48 hours. Dr. Balfour had been in his usual good health until Saturday, when he was seized with anillness which proved to bet" pneumonia, From the first his condition was serious, and his death was not un- expected. Several oft [the most prominent doctors in the city were in attendance 011 their sick col- league, and the most profound re- gret was expressed by the 'local medical fraternity at the death of. Dr. Balfour. Dr. Balfour was born near Mitchell about 57 year's ago and after attending the public school graduated from the St. Cath arinles Colleglitabe Inatitutp. 1 }Ie taught ;school in that district for some tune and later on in Ilderton From schoolmaster he became mad feat student in Western Univer- sity, and after graduating and se- curing the gold medal took apost graduate course in Edinburgh hospirtalst On his return to Lon- don he joined the staff of Victoria Hospital, which is as then known as the London General. Hospital On the resignation of Dr, C. W. Bel- ton, Dr. Balfour was appointed su- perintendent, and continued in that position for more than tnventy years', Since hie retirement from the hospital eleven years ago, h,e bad been in private practice, Dr, Balfour was a member of the staff of Westlern` University for many years, and was apopular lecturer, hiss specialties being obstetries and ;the diseases of women. He was also medical director of the North- ern Life. and aBoyal Arch Mason. In politics Dr. Balfour was a Re- former, and -ta, ainember of the First Pres'bytonian Church. Be- sides his wife. Dr. Balfour leaves four children Dr. E. B. Balfour. of Dashwood, Ont;, Richard, of the Northern Life, London, and Mae''ter James and Miss Jean at home. The remains of the late Dr. Jas,. D. Balfour were forwarded Thurs- day afternoon on the 4.40 train Grand Trunk to 'Exeter for burial. Services were conducted at his z'ie;s idenoe, 333 Queen's avenue, at 3,4 &chock by Rey. W, J. Knox, B. A pastor of First j, P,7rsbyterian Church, The ,pallbearers' were; Drs, Campbell, Clarke, ErbiestiWill- iam,s, Weekes, Meek and McGregor. The funeral was ra held• Friday in ixet+er. The following resolution was passed by the directors of the Northern Life Assurance Company of Canada g cord. with the deepest regret the .sudden death of James D. Balfour, M. D., which occurred on the 7th day of January 1914.Dr, D. Balfour was a man of unusual abil- ity and' sound judgdnent and of the ,strietist integrity.. He held a leading place among his medical brethren in t:h'e city and was a mens ber of the. medical staff of the Western University.'
