Mr. H. W. Erwin, the genial village
clerk, has been somewhat under the
-Weather for the past few days. It is
hoped, however, that he will soon be
his old self again.

The annual Cheisemas entertainment
in connection with the Presbyterian
• -church, was held on Tuesday evening,
a most enjoyable time being spent.
The gatheeing this year took on, more
than is usual, perhaps, the form of a
congregational gathering and eupper

the pastor presiding. After the pro-
gram the tree, which had been a thing
•of mystery and delight to scores of
bright eyes during the evening, was
-stripped and each and all received
some gift. The pastor was not for-
gotten. on this occasion, the members
of the Young Men's Bible ()lase pre-
senting him with a cutter robe and
a pair of fur driving mitts. These
were most appropriate gifts and
were much appreciated by the reci-
pient. Altogether this anneal Christ-
, mac gathering was one of the raost
I. enjoyable ever held in connection
-with this congregation.

their Christmas tree entertainment

Ward of the village of Varna has been
appointed_ by the comity council and
approved of by the crown rettorney• of
Goderich to act in the capacity eof

the fact, that it is as well to have
an officer of this kind at the village.

The scholars of 1313, No, 1, gave a
imp entertainment in the school house
on Tuesday afternoon to whioh the
section were invited. The program
consisted of eeadings, recitations, dia-
logues and choruses by the school,
rendered in such a way as to Whet
credit upon both themselves' and their
teacher, Miss Aikenhead. An interes-
ting ,feature of the programalso was
a guessing contest, fifteen of the
scholars being dretsed to re•preeent
familiar, advertisements, the visitors
to guess wliat they were. The success-
-lid guessers were Peter Moffat and
MTS. John Innis.

The late James Nesbitt, who passed
away on Comber 811s, 1911, in his
8611i year, was born in the County of
Monaghan, Iceland, April 1829, and
when a young man came to Canada,
I•Ier spent the first two years el more
in Durham county and' then came to
what was then known ' as Huron Tract,
He made his way up to this part of
the county and alter working at
chopping, ac., for a short tinee, he
bought the farm on the 7th con. of
Morris, now occupied by his sem Ro-
bert. The lot was solid bush and he
prided himself as being the -first one,
to chop a tree on it. Mr. Nesbitt
Started in to clear up his farm and
for about five years kept batch in
his shanty. Two years later, his sis-
ter, the late Mrs. Alex, Mcereight,
kept house for him.
On one of his' trips to Clinton, which
was then the market town, he mer and
became acquainted with Miss -Abigal
Sinatzer, of Godeeich township, and
in the course of a: year they wee,:
married, 1860, and four years ago
celebrated their golden wedding. They
indured the hardships of pioneer: lire
and by industry and economy they as
the years 'passed made a comfortable
home tor themselves and family.
After being 40 years on this place,
they decided bo retire from farming,
and bought a• lot and built .a home in
Blyth, and have been residents for
some twenty years.
To them were born a family of
eight, five boys and three girls.
There are left to mourn his' depart-
ure his widow and four of their fain-

Detroit, and Robert on the homestead.
All of them except Maurice, were pre-
sent when lie passed away.
In religion Mr. Nesbitt was Presby-
terian end in politics Conseevative,
but being rather of a retiring nature
he never took an active part in public
affairs.
The funeral which took place oft
December 10th, was largely attended,
service being conducted at the house
by Revs. W. I), Turner and George
&mitt, interment being made in Tin-
foil cemetery. The pall bearers were
Messrs. Wm, Phelan, John McCaughey
Polloek, N. (Mining and Wm.
Sims. Friends from Lucknow, Dun-
gannon, Wingham and Clinton were
present to pay their last respects to
one of 'their old friends.

Loretta Katherine Austin, second

Austin, passed away on the lith
inst, after an operation for appendi-
citis, She was ia her eighteenth year
and had graduated from the Colleg-
iate with honora in June last. The
funeral took place to Kingsbridgc,
where the family: formerly esided.
Miss L. Trainer of Chicago, at one
time a resident of Goderich, is visit-
ing Mee. and Miss Hays,

purchased a building lot in Zurich
with the intention of erecting a resi-
dence thereon in the spring, has sold
his one -hundred -acre fa,rm on the
