SHEPHERD'S VISION DEPICTED.
Announcement of the •Birth of the
• Saviour..
It must have been about midnight,
writes Thomas Nelson Page in Scrib-
ner's. 'rhe moon had crept slowly up
the sky and flooded' the hills with'
light. The oldest of the shepherds was
on watch, while the others slept. Many
things revolved in his mind -the
promises to Abraham and to bis seed
forever -the words Of peace that the
traveller from Nazareth had spoken,
swept through his memory. He began
to dream. And the first thing that
struck him -was the strange behavior
of the sheep In the folds. They rose
from the ground and facing towards
the mountain, knelt as lambs kne'el at
their mother' sides, t3ut they were
all still, as still as if carved of stone.
And while he wondered, suddenly
there stood- near him -so suddenly
that it was as if he had dropped dovin
upon, blin-a presence. Be• had no
time to questien-a light -a giory.um
imaginable -brighter than the moon -
more glorious than the sun -like the
glory of the Lord. It awoke some of
the others. It WAS round about thein;
and they were sore afraid. Then a
voice sounded in their ears -and the
angel said unto them: -"Fear not; for
behold I bring you good tiding/3 of
great Joy, which shall be to all people;
for unto you is born this day in the
city 'of David, a Saviour, wiiich is
Christ the Lord, and this shall be a
sign unto you; ye shall find the babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in
a manger."
Astonished and still terrified -stun-
ned beyond thought -the . shepherds
lay as they had been found -and sud-
denly there was. with the angel a multi-
tude of the Heavenly host, praising
God, and saying, "Glory to God in the
Highest, and on earth peace to men
of good will," Then they went away
upward -up into the Heaven -and only
the shepherds were left on the earth
with their flocks, When they re-
covered their courage and looked up,
the sky was as usual oa clear and
cloudless nights -and only the moon
was Shining down, flooding the fields
with light. They began to talk in low
tones of what they had seen and heard,
and to wonder what it all meant.
"Pat, do you understand

"Happy they who shall escape the

shall taste of the fruit of the reign
of the ,Spirit and the holy celebra-
tion of humanity, which cannot take
place until after the defeat of the
Antichrist."
Notes on the Prophecy.
(From the British Journal <if As-
trology).
In the Peophecy it appears that
the symbolism applied is as follows:
The Black Eagle -Germany.
The White Eagle -Russia.
The other Eagle -4 ustria.-Hun-
gary.
"The Cock -France.
The Leopard -Belgium.
The Lamb -Symbol of the Cheis-
tian faith, represented by Great
Britain, under the sign of aries.
The Antichrist -The Spirit of Hill
animating the Black Eagle, and
generally ' symbolized by the
Dragon or "winged Beast."
The.Raiser is the embodiment of
the "Blood and Iron" cult, as op-
posed to that of the peaceful arta
and federation. He belongs to the
Lutheran Church, while many of
his subjects are Roman Catholics.
Attention is caged to paragraph 4,
inwhichhe is said to have only one
arm (the Kaiser hes one arm with-
ered and atso a short leg, and he
mounts his horse by the wrong
aide). Paragraph 10 is quite des-
criptive of the German method of
waging war on neutrals and (100 -
combatants, The mention of Pope
Benedictus 10 panagraph 12 is re-
markable; his Holiness of that name
has but recently been elected to bhe
Papal seat. The fade that there are
many -priests figihting, and fighting
most bravely, in the ranks ce the
Alliee is a clear fulfillment of para-
graphs 9 and 13. All social and
spirituel differences are -abolished
,in the field. All soldiers are com-
rades. In the course of the preeent
war we find striking examples of
thii fact in the many priests who
go under fire with the greeted eour.
age, and ean fight and slay in the
eacred cause of their beloved coun-
try. Paragraph 35 gives us an idea
of 'the awful carnage that will at-
tend this war. Rome in the second
century had a. porulation of about
2,000,000-a feet which mast have
been known to Friar John, who was
obviously a Romanist. Paragraph
10 puts this War on its proper. spiri-
tual level, It is a war against the
tyranny of the autocrat, materialis-
tic philosophy, and the one-man
creed uf the German cult. It rea
garde all humans as embodiments of
spiritual forces which, at this -ti,rne,
are maesed together O'er the coming
'tribulation.' If Truth and &piety,
Peace and Juatice have their repre-
sentatives among men, so also have
thesedemoniacal powers who are
dominated ,by elle Father of Lies and
the Great Accuser. There is noth-
ing specific in the date "towerde the
year 2000," but the Swot, that we are
in the twentieth century, while the
writer of thie prophecy Eyed in the
sixteenth, appears at leaet a credit-
able enemata. It can liberally he

the story goes the rounds, the last
player „to receive it repeating aloud
'what he was told. This Is time coin. .

of course the conmagsoe creates lots
of amusement.
Spinning the platter is to wen.
known to require description. Varia-
tions are sometimes introduced where
several platters are to be kept spin-
ning at the same time This requires
a great deal of agility on the part .01
the players and is often attended by
nutay groteque tumbles.
Spotting is another game played
with plates, Iii this case the bottom,
of a p/ate or saucer is aooted by be-
ing neld for a second over a gas jet
or in a candle flame. Then eath of the
players is given a plate, the spotted
plate being among them. Some one is
selected to set the example, and at the -
command, ',To as I do," each of the
players draws .his lingers across the
bottom of his Ple.te.-and..proceeds to
pass it over his face, as WAS 00E0 by

Another Prophecy.
Dem Bosco, a priest at Turin,
founder of the Salesian Order, who
died &emit ten years ago, also pro-
phesied the war. His prophecy was
publiehed in Le Matin (Paris), in
June, 1901, se follows :
"A _European war will break o•ut
in 1913 or 1914. Germany will be
dismembered ; not, however, beforeshe shall have penetrated into the
heart of France, There a mighty
arm will hurl her back across the
Rhine. The man of pride will see
his tree shattered and cruthed to
t.he roots and trodden !under foot
by all. The great battle will take
place between the two .days. of Our
Lady, namely, between August 15th
and September 15th, when the Pope
is real and alive egain. Belgium
will undergo great suffering, from
which she will emerge increased in
strength and .admired by all. Po-
land will regain her rights."
A CHRISTMAS SONG.
Hail, Redeeiner, Saviour, Friend,
Who didst stoop our woes to end,
Who a little child beceme
Born to poverty and. shame:
Gladly we acclaim the morn
When thou ;east of virgin born.
Angel lips did Thee peoelairn,
And announce Thy royal name
To the shepherds in the field
Keeping wabeh their flecks to
shield;
Angel choirs ,sarer in the sky
Glory be to God on high.
Men Thy glorious star did see
As it beckoned them to Thee,
Humbly followed they its light
Till beheld the wondroas sight,
God in mortal fleah iisplayed
And in lowly 'manger latd.
Hail! Thou helper of the weak,
Come lost, erring man to seek.
Joyful vt)iees•new we raise
In a song of holy praise;
Hail again the happy :torn
When Thou, Christ, our , hope
west born.

PRAISES FOR PLUM PUDDING.
"1 have.nmpatience,': said one of our
beet -known physicians to the writer,.
"with Atte people who heap abuse ors
that grand British institetion the
Christmas pudding: They are mar
-
pleasures, who would, if they could,
rob life of all its enjoyment. Why, so
far from being harmful, plumpuddirig
is a most nutritious dish; and, if prop-
erly made, at least as digestible as
most foods. My sympathies are all
with the boy who demands "another
slice."
If there is any danger at all in plum
pudding, it is because It conies last in
a too liberal meal, and thus has to bear
the blame of the courses that have
preceded it, This Is its misfortune,
not its fault; and, even so, it would be
harmlees enough if people would only
restrain their appetites a little, eat at
the proper time, and assist digestion,
by excercise as they do on other days.
Our advice to all who wish to enjoy
their Christmas dinner to the full with-
out fear of consequences is to eat it in
the evening -net at midday -when the
digestive organs are at their besi; anct
to help digestion by providing pienty
of fuel in the'shape of oxygen. This
is best done by walking. -London,

SEEMS TO 3LE.
Seams to me the stars shine brighter
Christmas night;
Seems to me the view lies whiter
Christmas night;
That the solemn trees stand
straighter,
And the frosty moon sets later,
And the hush is stiller, greater,
Christmas night.
Seems to me sad things are fewer

Seems to me glad things are truer
Christmas night;
Seems to me the bells ring clearer
From their steeples, louder, nearer,
Seems to me the whole world's
