Text, Gal; 6. 7.
TheThee Inv'bation ,from a Pharisee.
Jesus lived as a man among men.
He 'shared hits' life, his, friendship,
his cotrversatiou, with all whom he
•calve in contact. He'aceepted the'
invitation of the Pharisee and ate
with publicans and sinners; he
sought to ally himself and his
cause with no party or faction; he
spoke of the' kingdom (of heaven),
but his kingdom oonveyed all tare
benefits of a government by and for
the people. Had his hearersbeen
able to understand the meaning of
the term, hewould doubtless have
taught them of the "democracy" of
heaven
37. As he spake-After he had
spoken.
Dine -Greek, breakfast.
38. Where the Pharisee caw it, he
marveled -Jesus had just come
from contact with the multitude,
he had even oast ,out a demon, so
the Pharisees would expect him to
purify himself- , ceremony en-
joined, not by the law, but by tra-"
dation, which the Pharisees tried
to make binding upon the people.
Perhaps the surprise of the Phari-
see was not expressed in words,
but was betrayed by his manner.
Bathed --Washing the hands is
probably what is meant. This was
often done, at the table, the ser-
vants bringing the water to each
person. It was not, however, re-
gard•ecl as a hygienic measure, but
a oeremonial'purification from the
influence of the evil or the unclean
with which one might have come
in contact, and as such the custom
deserved the rebuke of Jesus.
Dinner -The meal was bi'ealcfast
rather than dinner. Compare
verse 37 above.
39. The outside of the cup andof
the platter - The less important
Pant is kept clean. The important
part of the man is not cleansed.
I Your inward past is full of extor•-
I tion and wickedness -The idea
seems to he that the food which the
Pharisees take into their bodies is
the product of plunder and wick-
edness. Evidently many of them
did not earn their living honestly.
40. Paraphrased, this verse might
read: "Stupid men l Did not God,
who made the outside, Fiske the
inside as well? Why, therefore,
givesuch exclusive attention to the
outside f"
41. Doubtless a further reference
to the contents of the cups and
platters. If. this is shared with
the poor, it is a better way of keep-
ing the foods undefiled than by
much cleansing of vessels.
His Denunciation of Formalism
and Hypocrisy. Jesus was never
flattered lay the invitations or at-
tentions of 'those with whom it
might have ;seemed good 'policy to
ally himself. His reproof of evil
was given to the rich and influential
as severely and as unhesitatingly
as to the poor.
42-44. These verses contain three
of the seven `.`woe:;'.' that; were pro-
nounced against the Pharisees.
They are (1) against their extreme
scr!upuloitsness in , t.it'hing as cern
pared with their laxity in weightier
matters: (2) •against their love of
prominence; (3) against their hy-
pocrisy _
Rue -Thee Talmud mentions this
as nn herb for which no tithe need
be paid,
These ought ye to have done, and
not to leave theother undone -
Carefulness for trifles is not rebuk-
ed; it is the neglect of essentials
which Jesus condemns,
Love -Value highly. Compare
John '12. 43.
The chief stints in the :synagogues
-Special seats were provided for
prominent members of the syno-
gogune. Sometimes they sat on a
semicircular bench facing the con-
gregation.

mingled with Pharisees freely, im-
agining them to be good wen, and
were unconsciously influenced by
them OS one might step on an un=
seen grave and become polluted by
it. Compare- Nam. 19, 16; Matt.

canon the book of Chronicles came
last, so the murders of Abel and
Zechariah were the first and the
least murders mentioned in 'the Old
Testament.
The verses covering thie third
division of the longer passage are
not printed, bill should bo studied
00 part of the lesson. Theypre-
sent the natural sequence and un-
avoidable result of the stern denun-
ciation which Jesus had levied
against the hypocrisy of the privi-
leged classes, the Pharisees,
scribes, and lawyers, The reward
of disinterested love for all the,
people and fearless opposition to
hypocrisy such as Jesus manifest-
ed could not fail to arouse the un-
relenting hatred of those whose
insincerity he exposed.

In any real investigation of the mat-

to be taken iry itself, and a balance
of gains and losses struck in each

be proved to be on the whole worth
