By Wire
Few of us who scan the news in .the
daily papers are aware of the part the
telegraph plays in its transmission or the
extent of its services. Use has made it
so familiar we think nothing of it, fixing,
our attention on more recent marvels
The telegraph was born in 1844. The
first message sent, four .short words
"What hath God Wrought," limped'
across a, space less then a hundred miles
between Washington and Baltimore and
was reckoned a miracle. When Hoxey's
biplane fell at Los Angeles in 1910, New
York heard the news before the body of
the victim struck the earth and in anoth.
er instant 20 wires to as many cities
flashed the news, "I-loxeyhas fallen."
Robert Welles Ritchie, telling the readers
of Harper's Magazine how through 70.
years the wire has circled the globe and
brought nations andtongues together,
says that on an average day 1,190,000
words are sent over the landwires of this
country and that enough more are trans-
mitted by cable to foreign countries to
make the number 2,000,000. When the
news of the sinking of the ` Titanic was
brought to New York carrying the survi=
vors noir than 1,000,000 words were dis
patched by land and a third as many by
cable during the four hours after her ar
rival.
IIow "the wire" widens' the world for

can hardly conceive what the world
would be without it, "The wires are

that can only be conjectured, We hear
of a distant battle long before its dead

Cured Her.
Mrs, J. Day, 234 John St. South,
Hamilton, Ont,, writes: "I was so run
down with a weak heart that I could not
even sweep the floor, nor could I sleep at
night, I was so awfully sick sometimes
I had to stay in bed all day as I was so
weak. I used three and a half boxes
of Milbura's Heart and , Nerve Pills,
and I am a cured woman to -day, and as
strong as any one could be, and am doing
my own housework, even my own `wash -
"I doctored for over two years, but
got no help until I. used your pills."
