Correspondents of Finnish news-
papers report the heroic sacrifice of
the crew of a picket boat in order
to save a Russian cruiser, which was
unwittingly approaching a mine in
the gulf of Finland.
Realizing that it was too late to
signal the danger, the boat deliber-
ately rushed at the mine at full
speed. A terrific explosion followed.
Six of the crew of seven perished.
To the survivor, who was severely
wounded, was awarded the Russian
decoration of St. George.

By EDITH V. ROSS
l was studying art in Italy in the
hope of being able to return to Amer-
ica and set up as a portrait painter.
My headquarters were Florence, where
I lived in a room looking out on the
river Arno. Being a woman, I had
been careful to find a private family
who would take me in. One day I saw
a little Italian boy about twelve years
old playing on the Arno embankment
in whom I recognized at once an art•
iat's model. I asked him where he
lived, and he took me to his home
near by. I. made a bargain with his,
mother for him to come to my room
and pose for me at a franc a sitting.
