All Born and Raised
. in 'Huron County.
(By "A Taxpayer,")
The officers of the 161st Huron Ov-
ersea
s Battalion now being recruited
were all born and raised in the
County of Huron, and many have
sacrificed their positions and bus-
iness to give their services and time
to their Empire, their Country 'and
their Flag. A. comntittea of officers,
a member of Parliament, and Mayor
Reid of Goderich, composed a com-
mittee to interview the county coun-
cil and warden, and invite them to
assist in tortning a recruiting league,
each reeve to act as .chairman for
each municipality, call meetings and
help recruit a -battalion of one thous-
and leen for overseas service. What
was their answer ? No, We think
the f:overnnnent should do this, we
will -not assist in any way tel aid
the officers in raising a battalion to
protect the boys at the front, and
not assist in bringing this tear
speedily to a close.
When the council was asked for a
grant of money, .if they would not
give their services in recruiting,
they Might pay. The answer was
the same. No. The Government
should do this. What, reap we ask,
is the County Council but the Gov-
ernment of the People of Huron ?
Some of the members said the
towns had a lot of hums loafing
around, why do they not enlist,
and leave the rural boys at home.
How about the sons of the town aryl
village representatives of the Sturon
County Council who are not tilling
the land ? Have they enlisted, and
have they no higher ideal a£ patriot-
ism than they exhibited in the re-
mit meeting ltv their actions and
words ?
There is only one course for rat-
riotie people to pursue, elect repre-
sentatives who are itnn nlyi et:o: gb lo
reslre:'t the Wren who are fighting
their battles and their sons' tattles
and who, if they do not -offer their
services, will at last give, itt ret
of- this, tiivaneial assistance.
Soldiers and people, rally to the
good old County of Huron, and
show the' County Council that if
they have no feelings of patriotism
and respect foe the boys at the
front, we have.
We once had great respect for flee
ideas of some of the members of the
County Coanefl who opposed the as-
sistance to recruiting the 161st Bat-
talion, but up to the present time,
they •do not seern ,to realize that the
County] of Huron is a part of the
British Empire, which should assist
in protecting and doing its share in
efforts and money in bringing this
war to a speedy and victorious
close,
