The Canada Temperance Act
Stronger Than It Was
Thought to Be:
-
Clace, Sept. 24th. -Before Police
Magistrate Andrews here today four
different convictions were recorded
for violations of the Canada 'Mama-
anee act, now ;in force in Huran coma
tp. It was the result of ‘a shipment
of lager beer sent into Hensell last
until: by Heather's Brewery of Bet -
Me and addressed to a 11011i:ions
name, but ordered by and delivered to
W. H. Bender of the Commereiall Ho-
tel, The delivery of the wet goods
caused the trouble, as Bender, it was
eliarged, secured two automobiles
and replied the fifteen cases out into
the country and lodged them in two
different barns, and on the following
day took half of it to his hotel in
the early morning and the other he
took to his private house at Zurich.
At the former trial Bender was fin-
ed for bringing the goods into ai Can-
ada Temperance Act county, and to -
lay the. express agent at BenSall and
also Jae, Carlin and Wellington John-
son were each heed $50 and costs for
delivering liquor illegally brought in.
Thos, Kahle, to whose home part of
the liquor was taken, pays a similar
fine for assisting Bender in bringing
in tlic shipment.
The case against Held:lies brewery
was, at Heutherei request, adjourned
until next week. On advice; of the
G.T.E. lawyer, J. P. Pratt of Mon-
treal, A. L. Case, the; Henson agent,
pleaded guilty. Crown Atthrney
Seeger acted for Inspector Torrance,
and J. M. Best defended Kahle.
The case Is an important; ono, as it
establishes the fact that no liquor
can be brought, shipped or delivered
n a Canada Temperance Act county
Wass for the personal or family use
or the party bringing it in.
