ALK]INBAYN of the general staff, and powerful in: - fluences have been brought to bear toward that end. Last month the Field Marshal was placed in supreme command of the German -Austrian armies from the Baltic to Galicia, thus superseding the Austrian high command. General Falkeuhayn bas been chief of the general staff since the retire- ment early in the war of Count Hel- muth von Moltke, whose "illness" was generally attributed to the out- come of the Marne battle. Early in the war the Germans loudly boasted that victory would be theirs because they had the only great all -wise General Staff. For forty years the German military ma- chine had been in course of building, and it was built from the top down, not from the bottom up. The posses- sion of a magnificent array of gen- eral staff ofliners and field command - Te of soldiering, atned, in a life s ie u era, tr g, was cowited Germany's greatestatest asset. The sitill of Woo men was eo use the vast, terrible military ma- chine irresistibly, crushing first an one direction and then in another. The general staffs of France and Russia, such as they were, were looked upon with contempt. Brit- ain's little hundred -thousand army had a staff on a mh•or scale, It was also "contempiihlo." Gernhany was confident in and proud of us Higher Command, and believed that its mili- tary science could not be matched in the world. The wisest tit men fumble and grope against conditions that upset their calculations, J. Pierpont Mor- gan had millions of worthless stocks, The practical tests the Ger- man General ;Staff had to stand prov- ed that 1t was far from super -human. The younger Moltke, steeped in the traditions of the great marshal, found early disgrae" liter tho de- feat of the Marne, Von Falkenhayn, the greatest of German military or- ganizers, succeeded, He field the highest place on the staff for nearly two years. No one knows whether the Verdun disaster came of his policy, or whether the Austrian con- centration against Italy --a woeful blunder—was of German or Austrian ordering. Either the Roumanian de- claration of war forced a flat dis- agreement between him and the • Kaiser as to bow the new menace should be met, or convinced the 1Kaiser that popular approhenzion (could only be soothed by the placing Iof the popular idol (Hindenburg) In the post. The enthusiasm in Berlin over Htndenburg's appointment seems to indicate that for psycbologi- eal effect in Germany the change was well-advised. It remains to be seen whether Hindenburg, a field general, Iis a strategist who can get the best team work out of the many armtes of the Central Pose ere, SCHOOL TEACHER Wards Off Nervous Break Down Alburtis, Pa. -"I arm a teacher in the public schools, and,I got into a very ner- vous, run-down condition, I could not Bleep and' had no appetite. If I could bring ' a few of my neighbor settlers clown to townships in old Ontario where woodlots no longer exist, I. think the farmer occupying that 1an'd could tell them enough in ten minutes to per- suade them to save a piece of their' homesteads for the wood supply. "But there's a bigger end to the argufuent. I figure that as sixty per ceiht, of the whole of Canada will grow only forest crops with profit, our district, like other Canadian dis- tricts, ought to have sowmills, maybe pulp mills, scattered all through the forest land of this reglon, with vil- lages of warktuen and their families located around then so as to give us an easy market for our farm crops. You'll find it that way in lots of places in Canada, where the lumber- man, the pulpwood buyer, and the. settler work hand in hand, every man helping the other to make a living. There's room in this big country for everybody. It fisheries and mining forge ahead, farming and manufactur- ing have got to flourish, too. We're all in tie one boat and ought to keep stroke," The time for budding of roses varies in 'Canada, but from the latter part of July until September the stocks should be in condition in some part of the country. ONT. (Formula Windsor.' PDhii 3 FaVa>JIiW ^'l Lesson XIiI, — Fourth Qua-itci, For Dec. 24, 1910. THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES. Text of the Lesson, lea, ix, 2 -7 -Memo- ry 'Verses, 6, 7—Golden Text, .Isa. ix, 6 -Commentary Prepared by Rev. D. M. Stearns. I am always glad to bave a lesson in prophecy, remembering that the study of it Is 'specially commended and that our Lord said that those whe neglected it or were slow to believe it were fool- ish (II Pet. 1, 19; Luke xxiv, 25; Amos hi, 7). The prophecy of Isaiah ie a specially fascinating study, as It is an epitome' of the whole Bible and, very etra-ageiy, has the same number of chapters as there are books in the Bi- ble, and is divided into two parts of thirty -Wipe and twenty-seven chapters, Just as there are thirty-nine book in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New. Another interesting fact for young people is that the lettere in Old And Tenement are three and nine; which piieed together, make thirty. Aine and three tiaieS. nine gave twanty •seven, the number of bobke"tn' the Hep .;rax A., Page Seven neSFamont. .Os,e name isalan 51501neg.. the help or salvation of Jehovah, and next to the Psalms it le the greatest salvation hook in. the Bible as to the nee of the word, for some torn of the word is found in the Psalms over 120 times and in Isaiah over fifty times. There 15 no Saviour but one and no salvation apart from TElm, even as He said: "1, even I, am the Lord, and be- side me there is no Saviour." "A fust God and a Saviours, there Is none be; side mo" (Isa, x)111, 11; xlv, 21; Acts iv, 12). De is the center of the Bible and the 'circumference, too, for when He shall be King at Jerusalem, which God has placed in the midst of all na- tions and countries, an kings and na- tions shall fall down before Him and serve Him (I6zek. v, 5; Ps. Ixxli, 11), Tho first part or Isaiah is divided into smaller sectloid, the first two Do- ing sections of six chapters, each end- ing with'Isaiah's vision id th-e Xing on His throne (chapter vi), and Israel's national anthem when Re 'shall be their King (chapter xii). The section in which our lesson is tells us that the Messiah, who is also called Immanuel, shall be born of a virgin, that He shall gather all Israel, and n`atldne shall come to Him after He shall have smit- ten the earth with the rod, of His month and slain the wicked with the breath of His lips, and then shall the earth become full of the knowledge of the Lord as the -waters cover the sea (chapters vii, 14; xi, 4, 0, 12), The Spirit, through Mlcali, . said that He would he born at Bethlehem (and He was), that He would rule in Isreel (and He will) (Mac. v, 2-4). All that was written of 'His first coming in humilia- tion bas been fulfilled literally, and all that is written of His second coming in glory shall be fulfilled just as liter- ally. The second verse of our lesson chapter bad a fulfillment when He was in Galilee, according to Matt. iv, 12-16, The R. V. of lesson verse 3 reads, Thou hast multiplied the nation; thou bast increased their joy." This is in accord with other predictions con- cerning their glorious future,' as in chapter xsxv, 10. Lesson versos 4, 5, take us back to the story of Gideon and his 300 and his great victory over the Midianites and dellvertince from their oppression. That was very mani- festly the hand of tbe Lord, using 300 men, who were sifted out of 32,000 to defeat and overthrow a great army. Thatwas the v s t o zeal of the Lord of ho sts (verse 7), as it was also when Hoeg- telah was delivered from the hosts or Sennacherib (xxxvil, 32; II Iiings Zix, 111). It is an 0005001 expression and shall have a full and final fulfillment when He shall come again, of whom it Is written, "The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up" (i's, ixlx, 9; John ii, 17). Net armies and navies bat- talions and their equipments, weep, ons and munitions of war, shall bring His kingdom on earth; but, )m - hold, the Lord will come with fire Rud with His chariots like a whirlwind, for by fire nudby Isis sword will .the Lord plead with flesh tl•t b:vl, 16.111: Pe.
