,"Vs( Bravely. 4•raw one point or view
you served my cause well by preparing
to lower a boat. You misled my pered-,
eutors as to locality at least. Of
course I saw you and thought, you
were mad, but your actiotf did help
to conceal from thesoldiers the secret
of my true biding, place. 1 wish to be
candid with you. ' 1i- my friends and
1 had realized that you were here by
accident we ought to have taken, no
steps to save you."
"Really!" snarled Coke;' eying the
uni'uffed Brazilian mueb as an Anda-
lusian bull might glare at a picador.
A buzz of angry whispering came from
the Brew. Eveu this flashed a dis-
daiuful glance at the man who uttered
this ,atrocious sentiment. De Sylva
raised bis band.
"Pray, do not misunderstand mg,"
be.said., "1 alll as bumane as most oth.
ars, but' it as difficult to decide whether
or not mere bumauity, settlug aside
self interest,; would not lather con,
deme you to the speedy death of the
wreck than drag you to the worse fate
that awaits you Isere. And please re-
member that we did succor you, thus
risking observation and a visit by the
troops when tbe sea permits a landing.
But that is not the tree issue. An
hour ago there were four people on
this bare rock -four of us who looked
for escape tonight. We were supplied
with sucu small necessaries of exist-
ence as would enable us to live if our
rescuers were delayed for a day or
even two. Now there; will be no res-
cue. We are" -be looked slowlc urouud

cbcon-
sist of a half emptied skin of wine, a
bunch of bananas, a tew scraps of
maize bread and some strips ot dried
meat. Do -you follow me?"
There was a sound of hurrying foot-
steps on the steep pathway. A figure,
clad in rags that surpassed even De
Sylva's, appeared in the mitrauce. A
brief Colloquy took place. i)e Sylva's
eager gnestlous were answered in
monosyllables,
'Marvel tells me diet elle; of your
boats is drifting away with a man ly-
ing in the bottom," carne the uneasy
explanation.
"Good Lord!" 13ozier cried. "That
must be the lifeboat I was trying to
clear when the ship struck. Macfar-
lane was helping me, but be was hit
by a bullet and dropped across the
thwarts. I thought he was dead!" '
"Dead or alive, he. is "better off than
we," ,said De Sylva. Lie questioned
Marcel again briefly. "There Dan be
no doubt that the man in the boat cast
oif the • lashings when he found that
the ship was sinking," he continued
to English. "Marcel saw him doing.
haat nu0 wondered why he was alone.
At any tate, If he is carried beyond
the reef, be has a fighting chance. We
have none."
"Why riot? Ara these men on the
island so.deaf to human sympathies
that they would murder all of us in
cold blood?"
The girl's sweet, low pitched voice
sounded Inexpressibly sad in that
vaulted place, Even De Sylva's stud-
ied control gave way before its music.
IIe uttered some anguished appeal to
the Deity In his own tongue and flung
out his hands impulsively;
"What would you bave me say?" he
.cried, and his 'eyes blazed.' "1 alight

A phase more eloquent than the
most impassioned speeeb showed how
this frail straw eddying in the vortex
of their fate might yet be clutched at.
San Benavides, trying vainly to guess
what was Ileing said, blurted forth an
anxious inquiry. His compatriot ex-
plalned briefly. Somehow 'tate meas.
urea cadence of their talk had a less
reliable sound than the vigorous An-
glo-Saxon. They were both brave men.
Tlrey had not scrupled to risk their
lives in an enterprise where success
beckoned even doubtingly. 1318t they
were lacking wben all that remained
to be settled was bow best to die; in
sueb an hour the men of an English
speaking race will ever choose a fight-
ing death.
This time it was a woman who de-
cided.
Iris rose to her feet. Shebrushed
back the strands of damp hair from
her face and with deft bands made a
rough and ready coil of her abundant
tresses.
"Are you planning to send me with
two others adrift in a boat while sev-
enteen men are left bete?" she asked.
The Brazilian ceased speaking. There
was another uneasy pause. Dozier felt
that the question was addressed to
him, but be was tongue tied, almost
shamefaced. Coke, however. 'did not
shirk the task of enlightening her.
"Something like fhnt," 11e said. "We
can't let you cut in wits the rest of us,
missy. That wouldn't be reasonable.
But it's best to Or the bust/tees fair

any other way, not so loug as l'tn skip-
per," and he looked with brutal frank-
ness at De Sylva and the anxious, but
uncomprehending San Renavides.
The er-president knew what he
meant. Even in 111s despondency be
reseuted the implied slur ou his good
faith,
"You =mot examine the boat until
darkness sets In," be said. "Then yon
will find out bow frail a foundation

ridiculous to assume that she can be
made seaworthy. Her occupants would

"In any case, I refuse to go," said
Iris.

Lesson VIL--First Quarter, For
Feb. 13, 1916.
THE INTERNATIONAL 'SERIES..
Text of the Lesson, Phil. 14,1.11 -Mem.
cry Verses, 5.7 -Golden Text, 11 Coe.
still, 9 -Commentary Prepared by Rev.
D. M. Stearns.
The topic of this lesson is "Etumina.
tion and Exaltation," and the central
person is, as in all the Bible, the Lord
Jesus Chrlet, Creator, Redeemer, High
Priest and coming fling. From t110
day that Saul saw Him and heard Him
eat the way to Damascus he had no
eyes *nor ears nor heart for any one
else, as is plainly seen in some of his
words in this epistle: "To mo to live is
Christ:" q"Christ shall be magnified In
my body, whether by life or by death,"
"1 count all things loss for the excel-
lency of the knowiodge of Cbrist Jesus
my Lord, ° ° (' that I may know Him
and the power of His resurrection"
(chapter 1, 20, 21; fit, 8, 10). He never
ceases to speak of the gospel or the
good news concerning Jesus Christ (1, 6,
7, 12, 17, 27; Jr, 22; iv, 3, 15), and he
encourages all who believe the gospel
by such assurances as that He who
begins the work in them will not fail
to finish it; that their names are in the
Book of Life; that all their need here
shall be supplied; that in the resurrec-
tion the mortal body shall be °banged

lit. 20. 211. As to tbe present daily life
we must count suffering at privilege
and not be discouraged ot•eu by sick-
ness In His service, content ceder all
circumstances e tul free from all an
s-
ley, fully yielded to Flim, that He
may work iu as both to will and to do
of Etis good pleasure (chapter i, 29; 11,
25-30; iv, 0, 7, 11; ii, 13).
•
Iu our lesson verses s we are led to
consider the comfort that there is for
as in Christ by fellowship with flim
In the power of the soot. In the pros,
ent eondict with the world, the flesh
and the devil the only way is to run
with patience, looking unto Jesus, and
consider Him wbo endured such con-
tradictioe of sinners against Himself
for us, lest we be wearied (Heli. nil,
1.3). If we are in Christ tits God and
Father is our God and Father, 'and tie
is the Father of mercies and the God
of all comfort, and though we may
have tribulation we need not be trou-
bled (II Cor i, 8, 4; Jobn xlv, 27; xvl,
33; xx, 17). As we consider the meek
and lowly One, who said "Take my
yoke upon you and learn of me,"' we
shall be ashamed of• alt strife or vain-
glory, forthe servant of th Lord must
g ry, e
not strive (1\fate xi, 29; II Tim. ii, 24;
James M. 14.10), How unseemly was
the strife for grelutness among 5110
apostles on the last Passover night.
Even Baruch, the scribe of Jeremiah,
was told that he must not seek great
things for himself (Luke xxii, 24; Jer.
xlv, 5).
Pew seem to have attained to that
fulness of grace, which enables them
to rejoice in the welfare of another
church or denomination as well as
their own, because they pare not seen
that to gather .from all the world Elva

important thau the welfare of any

the mind of Cbrist they would never
goes tier their oN a reputation or name,
hut would live only to magnify 13im
who so emptied Himself for us. He
who lead such glory n'ith the rather
before the World was as we eaunot be-
gin to iluagiue bumbled Ilflnsel'f to
Bethlehem, and. Nazareth', and Oetir-
semytue, alai Golgotha, with all that
each name suggests, that all who wilt
acknowledge their guilt and receive
Him as their Saviour may become cbil-
hen of God and joint heirs with Him-
self and in dile time share His king -
dote and glory, To this end God lista'
raised HIM from the dead and set Him
at Ills own right hand, far above all
Mower and might and dominion and
every name: that is named, not only
in this world, but also in that which
is to come, and hath put all things lin-
der Ills feet and gave Him to be head
over all things to the Church winch
is His body (verses 0-11; );ph• i,> 20

It is this body and bride, that other
Eve for the last Adam, that is now be-,
ing. gathered from all the world In this
age to -reign -with Liam in the next tine,
when every knee shall bow to Him
and every tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is -Lord to the gloi;? of God the
Father. This will. be at the bare of
chapter iii, 21; Acts ail, 21; ileo. 111, 21,
and the fitness' for our taking part in
it all is seen in Gen. ill, 21. He must
reign till He bath put all enemies un-
der His feet (I Cor. xv, 25), but He will
not begin to reign till He has His live,
Iris bride, Ills body, the Church; to
reign with Iiia. We see not yet all
things put under Him, but we see Je-
sus crowned with glory and honor,
waiting for those other sons whom
He is bringing to glory' and fitting
them for it by their present sufferings
Web. 11, 8-11). Only as we by faith
see and thus realize something of bur
heavenly calling and the glory that
awaits us shall we be gladly willing
to fill any place of lowly service now
if only He can be magnified in us and
use us to win others to Rim and thus
complete His body and bring the time
of His marriage. The power of His
resurrection and our fellowship with
Him in it is the sustaining power 111
the fellowship of His sufferings (chap-
ter 111, 10).
