We ne thought of going so soon. But s :is army life ; we travel and do know -where; we are going, wh 'hots'', where or anything else, did not know that we were going Shorneliffe until we got here, Th 'we were not allowed to cable write home for four days. Es now we are afraid of the tens But he is not very strict on nl going from England to Canal ' From Montreal to Halifax we had pleasant trip, They gave us o supper at Montreal. We stayed the all night and were allowed out the city from 7 p.m. until 10.30. ;got our breakfast there again at 'left in the morning. Montreal is very pretty city, but nearly a ' Fr5t:eh, We were given another 'o'clock meal at Kenehec, and 10,30 dinner at Vendome Motel. 53 'tween times we were fed with su plies that were sent with us, so 'did not sutler for want of food. B sides we had boxes given to us a 'Ottawa. We travelled in coaches Ill lather had going west, and slei well in them every night because 'v had our blankets.with us, The: k that we carried everp place we too ed, unless it was a long distance • was two blankets and one rubbe •sheet rolled together and thrown et or our heads. Over that"" bandoli.el water bottle and haversack untie them,'and ,-two kit bags full on to of them, Believe ale it was coin load, but we can carry the way w put it on much easier and farthe than one would think, At 11.8 'n.m, the. next day we had a. splendit breakfast at ,Newcastle station ran a good dinner at. Moncton about 8,30 We were greeted by a large crow -there and were let off the train fo an hour or more again. Alter alone ton the journey was interesting: W passed Moncton, Sackville (Univer :City and the soldiers' detention -camp, where they; are shut in by walls of barbed wire, Frain here we had to pull down our blinds and were not allowed to mail any more 'cards or even look out of the' *al - dews, so we went to sre'ep until .,d arning, when we woke up to lied 'that we had been In Halifax several hours. Among others I was • put on guard ort Sunday morning on the water front to watch that enemy ships did not approach the harbor or -ships that did not answer the proper signals. I forgot to me'ntio'n that we 'did see the • old- City of ('uebee, the Plates of Abraham, the 'Citadel of Quebec, Lower and Upper. Quebec and the large Quebec Bridge. We had lunch at Levis' just aeons the river from Quebec. It gave its a. splendid chance to look around. UP to Quebec we travel lad by the St. Lawrence most of the way. Say' the Laurentian Mountains, Pro tint Hilaire, the Notre Dame Mts, , (.'hat - cur Bay, and hundreds of other in- tteresting sights. We boarded a tug about 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. '1 1th, which ih t kus 00 outto our boat a in the Bedford Basin, where we stayed until Wednesday morning, when the•'. Laconia, 'Punania, Southland and Corsican joined us. They were all troop ships' as well, Later a war ship joined us solely, for protection and we felt the engines stirring anti gradually Canada disappeared (coin view. The Lapland, our boat, is a splendid ship, She had about 2500 on hoard besides the crew, so we. bad lots of company and -never ch c ata ane to get home g sick or lonesome owing to the Witter clatter "air three French 'Canadian battalions, The fare and.. sleeping aecol.nodatirm was splendid..Life belt drill was a common thing. We'had .to wear the belts night and day after the first thlree days. But, thank. God, we' had • not the least chance to ase them, • aithongh two or three mysterious ships passed us, but 'they' ware afraid- to.,face 'our little cruiser, I guess. As we approached the non's coast, of Ireland six • torpedo de-' atroyers joined us, one with ca In boat., Tam the boats and torpedo destroyers paired oil suit manoeuzred us safely to Liverpool by Friday n.m. and we got to our tents in Sltorncliffe about 1.2 pan. that night. We are far mere comfortable here than we were at Rockclille, as we hove board floors hi our tent and splendid grounds and a pretty town right near us. It is really .surprising how dark everything is • here in all towns and cities at bight, railroad trains and everything all darkened. It is a common thing to see aeroplanes, but they are all British aeroplanes on scout duty so far. I am writing in my tent now bythe e li fit of g a Wau die so will hate to quit' soon as lights are out at 9.30. Ten of us sleep in a teat with a diameter of about fourteen feet, so you can imagine that there is no room to waste,U' b t'te have not r nuc h stuff to pack p away so we get along fine. I am with fout other Victoria men and two of theta are theologians. The Others are . students Soo, and nine of them just 'as good as, preach- ers, Maniey Shipley is right near us.
