Old Stanley Township Resi-
dent Passes Away
in Michigan:
From the Evert, (:Mich.) Review of
recent slate we clip the' following '
which has reference to the passing of;
.a former resident of Stanley town-
ship, though it is a gootitniay years
sine he left the old township, Mrs,
bh'r ;van is a sister .of Mr. 'Duncan
N.eEw'an, now of Clinton :
!'Peter illeFarlane, one of E,vart's
early pioneers'and exemplary citizens,
passed away Sunday morning. His
• health had been poor for many years
though the end was not expected as
soon. He had spent a portion of the
summer with his daughter, Mrs. E.
F, Birdsall, and Mr. Birdsall at Lud-
ington,
udington, and the past few weeks at
-the Birdsall cottage at Big Lake, A
week previous they had returned to
their home. Mr. McFarlane feeling
much improved, so it was thought,
though he became worse and the end
came as stated. .
Mr. McFarlane was born in Drum-
anoint;, Canada, January ;2nd, 1830,
..and passed away September 17th,
1516, aged eighty years,
' On January 1st, 1858, he married'
Catherine McEwen, They began their
married life in Stanley; Ont.>. fromm
which they soon moved. to Saginaw,
.Michigan, and later, in the fall of
1871, came to Evart where they were
among the foist settlers and they
have resided here ever since. To them
werebornfour children, Annie, Mar;
;;aret, Elizabeth and red, of whom
_,;., 'two survive. In 1887 Mr. McFarlane
.received an injury while t1o
erecting a
building in Meredith from which
he
never fully recovered, but, in spite.
of this, such was his energy and am-
bition that he never came to the.
place where he felt his work and re
.sponsihilities should cease. '
• He is survived by his wife, two
daughters, Margaret and. Elizabeth,
five grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
In the passing of:. Mr. McFarlane,
we have to mourn the loss . of still
another of those first settlers who
came here when this was just a clear-
ing in the woods and who, often at
the cost of real privation, laid the
foundations of our little village. But
we have even more to mourn for in
Mr. McFarlane we lose' a man of
• such integrity, such high principles,
such an undeviating sense of right,
that there is no man living who can
.say• that he has done him wrong.
And with it all he ,has always exhibi-
•eed that kindly sympathy, that ready
•comprehension of the feelings of oth-
ers to be found only in the man who
isnot merely just, but in the highest
:sense, generous.'
In cite funeral address Rev. J. C.
Cook paid high tribute to the man,
uncomplaining in his suffering, and
faithfulness in service .of the master ;
.,:he had •been a member of the H. E,
church during the :past forty-five
-Tears. Mrs. 'James Postal sang,
!`.Lead' Kindly Light." Old friends
.and neighbors, if, 'F, Andrus, E. C.
Cannon, William Latta, C. V. Priest,
John Birdsall and G. W. Minchin,
-were the pallbearers. Interment was
made in the family lot in Forest T:Ilil
•cemetery.
