The Late Dr. Charlotte Ross
Was a Citizen of Clinton.
The following obituary notice was
'taken from the Winnipeg Bulletin, It
was Mr: Whitehead, '1)r, Ross' fath-
er,
that built
'
the flflour mills
at
Blyth 1th and was for many years a
resident of Clinton and for more
than one term Mayor of that town
many years ago :
Dr, Charlotte Whitehead Ross,
widow of the late David Ross, who
. • for many years .teas a successful lum-
ber manufacturer and business man
in Manitoba, died at her home in
Winnipeg on, February 20th. She had
been .a resident of Manitoba since
14880, and was in her seventy-third
year, Theinterment tool[ place at
Brookside cemetery, where her hue-
band and two children are buried.
Dr. Charlotte Ross was born in
Yorkshire, England, on July 1,5th,
1343, a daughter of the` late Joseph
iitehead, well.known railway con-
'thractor, and for some years a Ricin-.
her of the Canadian louse of Com-
mons. She was brought to Canada
as a ehild and grew up in Clinton,
Ont,, where she was married in 1861.
From Clinton her husband removed
to Montreal, where he was for some
Fears engaged as a wholesale mer-
chant. During these years Dr. Ross
was for four years a student of medi-
cine at the famous Woman's itIedicai
College of Philadelphia. Returning
to Montreal she practised medicine
for some years, being the first worn-
i,n to engage in the profession in that
metropolis of Canada. In this under-
-taking she enjoyed the continued
sympathy, and support of the Iate Sir
Hales Hingston, one of the most dis-
tinguished physicians whom Canada
lias produced,
In 1878 Mr. 'Ross came west to
take part with Joseph Whitehead in
the performance of important con'
bracts in connection with the con-
struction of the Canadian Pacific rail-
way, in which he was for some years
engaged, Later he bought the tim-
ber limits on the Whitemouth river,
and there Dr. Ross joined pini and
spent a third of a century. in this
long period she was the only physic-
ian
hysioian in a large district where for
Many years many hundreds, of men
eengaged, During these years
'she did all the work of a general
practise, dealing with hundreds of
.cases of accident of every kind on
the railway and in the wood, tie and
timber camps, Her husband died in
1912, when she removed from White
mouth to Winnipeg, where slit has
since lived in retirement. She was
.a woman of extraordinary •activity
.and powers of endurance and her
.death at her :present age is attribut-
ed to excessive labors in the pioneer
daps of this province.
She is survived by sic children, as
follows : Mrs. Belle M. Wood of Kan-
sas City, Missouri; Mrs. Hope Ross
of 1414 Lenore street, Winnipeg Hal-
