"THE EARTH IS OURS!"
Bombast of a German Author Re-
garding World Power,
A Swiss publishing firm is pre-
paring French and English editions
of Taunenberg's "Gross Deutsch-
land," which is claimed to have done -
for Pangerznanism what Bernhardi's
works accomplished in the German
Army."
The book expounds the following
doctrine of German expansion:
Whatever we set out to do, we
need never trouble about the right qr
wrong of the matter, since we have
might on our side. '
We need never worry about any-
thing we may do, since history wit
show us that there is nothing we can
do, however bad, that has not already
been perpetrated in the course of the
growth of the world. -
We need never fear that other
tion will interfere with tie. Our ad-
versarras are too divided to do us
any harm. As for England, every-
thing with her is a :natter of arrange-
ment, and, provided we buy her off,
we can do what we like,
We have evoything 'to gain by
launching out. The earth is ours
for the taking. With Germany to
lead the way, the world will indeed
'increase and multiply." AR Lower
Asia can be ours; ours, again, as
much of Africa as we wish, without
mentioning South America. And ff
that is not enough, we have only to
stretch out our hands and take more.
There is no need to waste compas-
sion upon those who would go under.
Such little countries a.S Holland, Bel-
gium, and Switzerland could ask" or
nothing better than to belong to the
great German Empiee.
This was the kind of teaching that
drove Germany into the present great
upheaval. •
TONIC TREATMENT
FOR THE STOMACH
The Modern Method is Most Suc-
cessful in Treating Indi-
gestion
The old-fashioned method of treat.
in indigestion and stomach troubles
are being discarded. The trouble
with the old-fashioned znetitod was
that when the treatment was stopped
the teouble returned in an aigravat
ed form. The modern method of cur
ing indigestion and other stomach
troubles is to tone up the stomach to
do nature's work. Every step toward
recovery is a step gained, not to b
lost again. The eocogery of the ap
petite, the ditappearance of pain, th
absence of gas,—are all steps on th
road to health that thoee who have
tried the 'tonic treatment remember
distinctly. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills
are a blood -builder, tonic medicine
every. constituent of which is helpful
in building up the digestive organs
and is therefore the very best remedy
for chronic cases of stomach trouble.
Thousands of cases like the following
prove how successful this treatment
is:—Miss Amy Browning Cornith

ENEMIES OF FIGH1'1NG MEN
--
Insects Which Ildithe the Soldier
Life Miserable.
Insects which prove such a nuisance
to the fighter in time of war are
ply those which affect man in time
of peace, but owing to the different
circumstances which arise in warthne,
their effects are more violent and
more persistent. Roughly speaking,
we can divide these pests into two
Those which pierce the skin of men
or of anintale on which the soldier is
to a great extent dependent—for in-
stance, the horse; tied
Those which interfere with his food
supplies.
It is only a few years ago that the
spread of the bubonic plague was as -
sodded first with rats and the with'
rat fleas. „The commonest rat fleas
in all teopical and subtropical coun-
tries infest man, and if they should
have fed- upon a plague -infected rat
and subsequently bite man, their bites
communicate bubonic plague. Plague.
—the old English "Black Death"—is
a real tient in the annies now opee-
ating in Asia and in certain parts of
Africa.
Just as some fleas attack one spe-
cies of mamma/ or bird and avoid
closely allied species, so the human
flea has its faVorites and its aver-
sions. There is a Turkish proverb
which says, "An Englishman will 'burn
a bed to catch a flea."
Perhaps the most important of bit-
ing insects is the mosquito, certain
species of which convey malaria—a
disease which has probably,played a
bigger part in the history of the -world
than that conveyed by any other in-
sect.
Finally, we come to a series of in-
sects whic affect the food of soldiers
and sailors. One is the flour -moth,
whose larva burrows through the sol-
dier's biseuit and not only constunes
a considerable portion of it, but ren-
ders it so unpalatable that Sergeant
Daniel Nicol, of the 92 Gordon High-
landers, tells us that, "during the ex-
pedition to Egypt, in 1801, some ves-
sels were dispatched to Maori Bay for
bullocke end others to Smyrna- and
Aleppo for bread, which was furnished
us by the Turks—a kind of hard, dry
husk. We were glad to get this, as
we were then put on full rations, and
our biscuits were bad and full of
worms; many of our men could only
eat them in the dark."
The biscuits became infected during
he cooling which takes place between
Ise baking and packing. The adult
nsect is a perfect nuisance in flour
rnills. So persistent 804 'numerous are
hese moths at times that they clog
he rollers with their cocoons and
ometimes completely stop them. The
vebbing of the elevators in the mills
ets covered with them and with their
ilicy skeins, and then the elevators
top working. So uniform is the tem'
erature of ihe mill and so favorable
o the life of the insect that they cern-
favor. I was badly run down and my a,
stomach was in a very bad condition. ts
A11 food distressed 'me, and left me "
disinclined to eat. I suffered from ,P
nausea and dizziness and frequent ;
sick headache, and this was further ;
aggravated by pains in theback and "
sides. I was in this condition for
several years, and although I had
got medicine from several doctors it
did not help me. Then I heard of Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills and began taking is
them. I am glad to say that they soon p
helped me, and 'how I am 'as well as a
ever; can eat all kinds of food with'
relish, and heve not an ache or pain."

ADMITS U-BOAT FAILURE.
German Critic Also. Says Pressure of
British Fleet is Felt.
In a review of the naval sitpation
in the Berliner Tageblett, Captain.
Posius remarks that the significance
of sea potder, though triperceived by
the superamial observer, in reality
played many a significant role dur-
ing the past year. In the North -Sea
the pressure exercised by the British
Fleet made itself felt in German
economic life.
Captain Persius claims that Ger-
man IT boats during the first half of
the year jeopardized British corn-
mereial shipping in the North Sea,
and German and Austrian U boats
accomplished the hame ends in the
Mediterranean during the last few
months. In the Baltic, British sub-
marines were able to boast of some
successes. After expressing the opin-
ion that the entire elimination of the
submarine danger requires a decisive
blow by a hostile fleet, he says:—
Regarding the effectiveness of our
U boats in the trade war 000 hers
frequently nowadays views that'bear
little resemblance to the views utter-
ed a year ago. • Then, alas, hopes
Were extravagant, owing to . a dis-
regard of facts which the informed
expert indeed observed, but which
remained concealed for the laymen.
Captain Persil's then gives figures
purporting to be derived from good
authority regarding the losses ,caused
to allied shipping by submarines and
mines' estimating the British losses
at 5,9per cent. of the entire British
merchant fleet before the war. He
says:—
We must, however, take into con-
sideration the fresh supply of ships
as the result of sedulous British in-
dustry as well as of the purchase'
of neutral and the seizure of enemy
merchant vess

Great Horde of Vicious Rodents Su

A Migration of rats, estimated at
50,000, surprised the residents of
Petrozgrad. The Customs House dis-
trict and the grain 'markets of Petro-
grad are iefested With innumerable
rats, often of large size and great
boldness.
They go to. water usually in the
still house of the -night in serried
ranks. Watchmen whe see them get
out of their way, as they attack
isolated men when in numbers. There
are traditions that persons Who have
tried to interfere with these armies
of rats have been overcome and kill-
ed and eaten.
Vie last migration was by day and
the route led across the Nevsky pro-
spect. Thousands were cut to. pieces
by the electric street cars, and bands
of boys arid men killed niany others.
This 'daylig.ht migration was no doubt
caused by the emptying of the grain
