I THE POWEROF THE NATION
By Augustus Bridle
Ten months ago a man named Nich-
olas Romauon' was ,gar and away the
richest man in the world. Rockefeller,
Carnegie and all the Rothschilds rolled
into one had not one-quarter of the
wealth of this ratan, who owned in his
own person all the undeveloped lands.
mines and forests of Russia and about
half the industrialized wealth of all the
Russlas, For several months now Nich-
olas Ronutnotf has been poorer than a
hessian Peasant; because lie has the
peasant's food and clothes, but not the
peasant's liberty.
What transformed Nicholas 9, from
that dizzy height to what he is? Re-
volution. Nicholas was the only read
big aristocrat in the world. The Kaiser
rules Germany through big interests.
Nicholas ruled Russia by I -Ani. And
the moment Russia decided to have
done with I -AM in favor of We -Will,
all the power and property of Nicholas
were swept away just as you sweep
checkers off a board. What gave him
that property and power? The State.
He thought he was the State, to him-
self he had nothing. And he is now as
much a charge on the State as any old
bedridden widow ever was on the 18IWS-
ship. It was the States signature, re-
presenting the wealth laid the nation
fund all of 12ussia, that gave Nicliolats
what he was and had. When he Inst
that he lost everything but his life.
We have no Nicholas Ronanofi' in
Canada. But the, power of the nation
is here, just as it Was in Russia. When-
ever fhe 11011011 decides to affix les sign-
ature to a document drawn in favor'
of John Snaith, that num Is sure of a
his stoney, in 0 very' little while the,
nation of Canada, in the person of
itis Finance Minister, will be putting
its signature of scores of thousands of
documents promising to pay money, at•
a future date with interest at 5 j t `2.
Temporarily the nation needs the mon-
ey, The people have it. Asa mere
natter of right, the State cou•Id seize
that money along with all other proper-
ty, because 14-5 Wily the State that
snakes property, just as it did in the
case of Nicholas R. flu., the state robs
no pian. 1t merely wants to use the
wealth which people have ars a result
of the State's protection, fur the pur-
pose of helping to finance the war,
To get the Iran of this Meaney the
State issues Canadian Victory Bunds.
Behind the promise to pay -back ,in
every one of those lo,rrds is the w'eadttl1
and the power of the State that already
' guarantees property rights to every
maul :and woman in Canada. When the
State decided to pluck the feathers oft

CHRISTMAS MAiL FOR OVERSEAS
CLOSE ON NOVEMBER 15.
All Christmas parcels intended for
soldiers overseas must he in the post -

not reach the mon at the front until
after Christmas,
This statement has been given out
by the Postotlice Department, 10 an-
swer to a query as to what time Christ-
mas parcels should be mailed in order
to reach the soldiers before or on
Christmas Day.
The influx of mail for overseas has
not occurred yet, but is expected to
begin right away.
Postutlice otNctals wish to impress
upon relatives of soldiers, the necessity
cif sending Nn parcels as early as pos-
sible, if they wish them to reach France
before Christmas, 1t will not be known
exactly when Christmas 111111 will be
sent to England, and because of this all
paieeis should be in early, preparatory
for an unexpected shipment.
