"The Birth of a Nation," D, W, Grif-
fith's massive spectacle, coming to
Clinton on friday, Oct, 5th, in the
town hall is the largest and most im-
portant production of a decade, yet not
a word is spoken throughout the per-
formance of nearly three hours. Mus-
ic supplies the absence of speech, niece
anical effects and realism, whilst the
wizard of the screen, David W. Griffith,
enfolds in 12,000 feet of iilm the thrill-
ing romance of the War between the
States ani the Reconstruction of the
Southland. Sonne idea of its magni-
tude may be had from the facts that
18,000 actors and 3,000 horses took
part and that the staging of this great
"outdoor" drama cost half a million
dollars. Several of the actors are of
Southern lineage, henry Walthall,
who platys the heroic role of the little
Confederate colonel, is. a member of
the well-known Walther; :amity of Ala-
bama, dllriam Cooper, who appears
as Margaret Cameron, Is s direct dds-
Ce.ndent of Charles Carroll, the Mary-
land signer of the Declaration of In-
dependence. Mr. Griffith is the son
of n Brigadier General of the Confed-
erate Arnv, For every character, how-
ever smelt, Mr, Grili!th has foetid just
the personality needed. After that his
masterly direction made each one give
n perfect characterization of the widely
varying roles. The result was .1,01 act-
ing but life itself. Such realism is
never seen in the old•faehioned stage,
The limitations of the theatre were
swept awry for maitre was Mr, Grif-
lith's stag: 1,.nnr11;lr after f.anorana
15 revealed to the esio asked eyes of the
spectator. The. most inventive itna-
Ination could hardly picture to its•
self elicit scenee or splendor. Seats

Soldiers Letters
livery soldier has his friends at

interesting sidelights on the battles
or conditions at the front. The New Era
will be pleased to have letters from
the front fur publication. In supply-
ing such letters to us ;he recipients

"The Birth of a Nation" Coming.
The merest statement regarding
"The Birth of a Nation" leaps to sup-
erlatives because there is no other
forst in which it can he written,
Simple facts in relationship to its de-
velopments sound extravagant until
you have seen the production and real-
ized a tithe of its sweep and power. It
covers the essential details of Ameri-
can history ranging through three cen-
turies. Actual battles are shown with
terns of thnusaunds of soldiers in 111e
con Dict. 18,000 people participated
in the telling of the story. 'Three thou-
sand horses were used to give the cav-
alry :and other thrilling effects of the
wild dashes over miles of territory.
Cities were built up only to he destroy-
ed by fire. The total cost of the entire
production was in the neighborhood
of 5500,000. Five. hundred costumers
and seamstresses worked for three
months to make the costumes worn by
the people, 10,000 yards of cloth were
worked into the costumes worn by the
women while 25,000 yards of white
muslin were used up in the regalia of
the Ku -Klux -Klansmen. And yet with
all this a simple, human Story of love
and romance weaves through the vast
spread of the action and grips the
hearts of the audience. The nar-
rative is titled with tears and smiles. A
musical score accompanies the action
and lends a potent force to the drama.
