In Quebec Province the blatant anti-en-

It is said that some of the British Batteries
used their guns so much that they heated and
firing had to cease but with a self-denying
that proved their courage • and heroism to
be the real things they emptied their water
bottles on the guns and resumed the hail-
storm of shot and shell. Such a spirit is
worthy of the best support possible.

The Daughters of the Empire recommend
that the National Anthem be sung at the
opening rather than at the close of public
meetings and performances. This certainly
is sensible. As things now are, in the hurry
of people to make a getaway the King is
more likely to be treated with disrespect than
respect.

Guelph Mercury Editor has family troubles
of his own. He's worried• now about a 3
months old Philadelphia baby who weighs
100 pounds and the cause of sorrow is: "How
to hoist this cute little thing over your should-

Mitchell Advocate might give the Guelph

These are the days when deeds cow*
better than words. Sentiment -is all right
in its place but if a man is hungry a loaf
of bread fills the need infinitely better than
a treatise on mental or moral achievement.
The pledging of our fidelity to the Empire
has been ,well told in song, speech and story
but when the bugle sounds the advance and
our brave khaki lads climb ower the parapets
to meet the foe something more is essenti4
to win the day. Conscription or voluntary
enlistment is being bandied about but more
definite and united action must be pro -
gran -tied if practical support is to be.secured
to don the colors and heartily support the
soldiers of- the' Empire at the front, Let us
quit snarling and shuffling and stand by the
Red, White and Blue.

The supreme task before the British Em-
pire is now to win the war and secure the
final victory in 1917. if, through indiffer,
ence, tardiness or refusal or proper support in
men, money and munitions, is not accorded
and Germany should win—What then? You
say that such a thing could not be. Suppose
Russia continues to be unsettled and busy at
settling her home perplexities that she will
not throw her night against Pr'ussianislii,
who is going to supply the millions to take
their place? The heavy weight has rested
on the British and will continue to do so to
close of the great struggle and now is not
the time to withold unless we wish militar-
ise to triumph and Germany dominate this
great Empire, We look for splendid support
from the United States bid some months
may elapse before they get a fighting force
of weight in the trenches, although the first
contingent may soon take part in the con ;act.
"Win the war" is the slogan.
