SUNDAY SCHOOL Lesson Xi.—Second Quarter, For lune 10, 1917. THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES. Text of the Lesson, John xix, 16-30. Memory Verses, 26, 27—Golden Text, i Cor.xv,3—Commentary Prepared by Rev. D. M. Stearns, Pilate seems to hare tried again and again to release taint, end his wife Also sent him word to have nothing to do with that just ishan, for she bad suffered ninny things In a dream be- cause of Him (Matt. xxvii, 19). Peter testified after Pentecost that Pilate was determined 10 let Him go (Acts Ili, 13). He evidently thought when be asked them to choose between Christ and Barabbas as to which he should release unto them that they would surely ask Or Christ. But they cried out, "Not this man, but 13nrel) bus," although Barabbas was n robber and murderer (chapter xvifl, 40; Acts iii, 14), Pilate's tear to touch Him in. creased when the Jesus said that His crime was that He suits lie was the Son of God (verse 7). When Pilate asked Elim about tits Jesus at first mode no reply, but a little later said to him, "Thou couldost imve 110 power against Me except it were given thee from above; therefore he that delly- ered Tile unto thee hcth the greater sin" (verse 11). The first pert of this reply must re- fer to the will of God, the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, that which I3im baud and I3im counsel deter• mined before to be done (Acts it, 23; iv, 28), the last part to the high priest who delivered IIlm to Pilate. There are degrees of sin and degrees of pun- ishment for the lost, as there are de "reps of rewards for the righteous (Luke xii, 48; Rev. xxit, 12)., When the dews cried out, ";f thou let this man go thou art not Caesar's friend; a we have no king but Caesnr" ;verses 12.13), PIlate took water rand washed his bands before the multl- :ude, saying, "I am innocent of the 'tlnod of this just person; see ye to it." l'heu the people said, "ilia blood be 01 us and on our children." Then he pleased Barabbas, scourged ,Tesue and lellvered Him to be crucified (Malt 24.20). Why did be scourge Wm after be declared Film innocent? Why lid he deliver Ulm to the brutal sol- diers to be mocked and spit upon and so ill treated? Even a guilty man is protected from injustice at the bands or Ms enemies as a rule. 1f we caunot reply to the why. let each one at least say it was all for me. the Holy One of sod sulTerilg h1 niv etead, When we see the Son of God, the Creator of, all things, the Judge of all mankind, re- ceiving such treatment at the hands of the civil and religious authorities and remember that they are just the same today, what should be our attitude to them? When we hear Pilate say. "Be- hold the man!" and "Beheld your king!" (verses 5-14r we think of the true testimonies of the Spirit, "Behold the man whose mime is The Branch!" 'and "Behold, thy king cometh(" (Zech. vi, 12: ix, 0). c So Pilate delivered ,]esus to be cruci- fied, and they took Wm and led Him away, and He, bearing His cross, went forth Iversen 16: 17). They met one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming into the city and compelled him to turn about and help Jesus bear the cross or bear It for Him (Luke xxiii, 20). We remember that He said, "if any man will come after ate, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me" (Matt. xvi, 24). Let us not forget that the cross is never anything beautiful, but a cruel thing signifying a Painful and lingering death. Many women fol- lowed Ulm, bewailing and lamenting Him, but He told them not to weep fbr Hint, but for themselves And their children because of the things that would come upon them (Lake xxlii, 2T- 31). Having reached Golgotha, they crrucIfied Rist and two evildoers with one on either side and Jesus in the midst, end thus He was numbered With transgressors, all for me, The Tour soldiers divided His gar- ments among them, but for His coat they cast lots, thus fulfilling another Scripture (verses 28, 24; Ps. xxii, 18). Perhaps three more awful words were neves .written than these, "They cruci- fied Him" (verse 18), when we consider who He was that they crucified, the Prince of Life, the Lord of Glory (Acts iii, 15; I Cor. 1), 8), and that He submitted to be a curse for us that we might not petish (Gal. lid, 18), We have in. our lesson three of His seven sayings on the cross (26,, 23, 80); but, taking them in order from all the rec- ords, we have first forgiveness,' even for those who crucified Him; then glory for even a penitent tbiof; then provision for His own eiotber, suggest- ing the supply of all we can need be- tween salvation and glory, The fourth was at the beginning of the darkness, "My God, my God, why bast thou for- saken orsaken Mo?" and the other three at the close of those awful six hours, "I thirst," "It is finished," "Father, into thy hands I commit My spirit." When the Jews asked Pilate to have the bodies removed that their Sabbath day might not be desecrated (oh, the utter hypocrisy' of it alit) the soldiers broke the legs of the two malefactors, but found Jesus dead already, so they did not break His legs, but a soldier pierced Eris lido, and thus two Scrip- tures were fulfilled, Ex. xii, 46; Zech. xii, 10. The last part of the chapter describes His burial by Nteodet1ppus and Joseph in Joseph's new tomb, and thus Watt fulfilled the saying, With the rich in His death :(lea; Iiti, 0). They are about as effective and much easier to use, although possibly a trifle more expensive. Bordeaux, arsenate of lead, powdered sulphur, and tobacco dust, used dry, will protect the garden i'om praetially all insect pests and fungus troubles. They can be used in a powd- er gun, or dusted from a cheese cloth bag, and require no messy mixing. If transplanted on a cloudy day or late in the afternoon young plants will receive but little shock, especially if the ground ]las been thoroughly soaked with water some hours in advance, so that the soil will adhere to the roots, Usually they should be set up to the first leaves or stent, and in case of cabbage and sinhiliar plants it is a good plan to cut off one half the leaf growth with a pair of sissors, If the work must be clone under a hot sun, the plants should he shaded with a shingle or by some other means. ONTARIO AFFAIRS ABLE COMMITTEE DOING GOOD WORK Farmers, Laborers and Business Men Represented on °reanimation of Resources Committee After some mouths or earnest bit restricted efforts by the Ontario Or- ganization of , Resources Committee, that body, enlarged and enriched by the addition of a number of promin- ent, private citizens from the ranks of ag,rleniture, labor,MIMICS and other interests, has now widened its scope and is performing even greater ser- vices for the province, particularly in its efforts to cope with the fend situa- tion. it was in the legislature on Marek 28, 1916, that Mr. Rowell, seconded by Mr. Proudfoot, moved a resolution accepted by the Government, calling for the most thorough cgrganizatlon possible of the resources of the pro- vince for the successful prosecution of the war ana tho enaiuteoau0e of our agricultural and industrial produce tion, and recommending the apiiolnt- naent or a select committee to look into the matters, including not only the work of recruiting men for the Canadian Expeditionary :Force, but also of ensuring a sutilelont supply of labor for the agricultural interests and the necessary industrial operations of the province and of promoting thrift and economy among the people, there- by strengthening our financial posi- tion during the war and preparing for the period or subsequent reconstruc- tion. At the Line, Mr. Rowell emphasized the ihnportnsee of agrlcultural devel- opment and the need of handling vig- orously the pressing problem of farm labor, which was becoming more and more urgent as recruiting continued. Mr. Rowell's resolution was adopted unanimously. A. committee was ap- pointed and as s. result of their recom- mendation rho Organization of Re- sources Con nttteo was formed, At first only members of the legislature sat on the committee and it is to be regretted that outsiders who have proved such etleienL helpers, were not brought in earlier. In conference with the agricultural interests they perhaps could have done something last year In agricultural production and at any rate could have worked out at a sufficiently early time more detailed plans for the present year, Even as it is, however, the committee has done and is doing splendid worst, which reflects great credit on the Op- position and the Government which brought it into being. TALK PROHIBITION OF MANUFACTURE Provinces May Also be Given )light to Stop Import of Liquor— Food Problem An extension of prohibition even from the measures in force at present In Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and .Alberta, Is becoming a live sub- ject qt disoussion. For some time Mr. Rowell has been contending that eith- er the "Dominion Parliament 'should pass a measure of Dominion -wide pro- hibition during the war or as an al- ternative that they should enact a law. which would allow eny province to prohibit the manufacture and'jmporta- tion of ligiier by a resolution from the legielature of •that province or by a vete of the people of the province. Mr. Rowell emphasized the relation of liquor to the present critical food sit- uation. -"What justification it there," he has asked, to continue in this country the waste of food materials 'in the manufacture during war time of intoxicating liquor?" Sem Carter, Liberal member for South Wellington, speaking recently at Farkdale, declared that not another bushel of grain should go into the making of liquor. It Is interesting to note that a simi- lar campaign in Great Britain is be- ing waged with the greatest vigor by the "Spectator" -one of the most con- servative journals in the British Isles. Mr. B. B. Neeley, Liberal member for Humboldt, in the House of Com; mons, has given notice of resolution to allow the provinces to prohibit the manufacture and importation of alco- holic liquors for beverage purposes. Rumor at Ottawa thinks that the Gov- ernment may adopt some such pro- posal. To each and all of these persons its inhabitants were of mighty importance, and its neighbor- hood an interesting one, int ''act the Hermitage tests to receive nu•re guests than it expected that white evening. First of ail came Major Bellwood, a heavy elan upon a big roan horse, pounding solidly along the road from New York, The major was heavy not only in weight, but in every way—in his manners, his voice, his conversation, he had a heavy hand upon those beneath hint, and a heavy frown for one who bent not this way and that at Isis word. lie was one Who used his superiors to his own ends, in spite of whispers against him in the king's army; one whose will was of that stubborn kind which will not yield, but must be ground to pieces. Such, briefly, was Major Bellwood, now riding towards the Hermitage for the expected bliss of tanning a woman of spirit. He was the first of the travellers to near the common destination. Next came Burr, all the lover, eager to support and defend his mistress in her need, even to the extent of repeat- ing his former performance with six men and he river as his fellow players; Burr, who looked like nothing so much as a slender stripling—a David to oope with the English Goliath. The river trip was shade successfully, th British keeping no watch worthy the saline upon so stormy an evening. They had not yet learned the lesson which the Americans were constantly teaching then, that of striking in the expected place at the unexpected time, and the more stormy the thine the bet- ter. But to Burr, just now, British ships and armies had resolved them- selves into one man, and nothing beside counted. The fact that another boat made stealthy crossing a little lower down the river, keeping almost abreast of his own, would not have troubled him had he known of it. The fact that a party of six men, one mounted, had abondon- ed this shoat, had descended upon a comfortable farmhouse near the river - and had procured four horses at pistol point from tlfe astonished householder would perhaps have troubled hits more had he guessed that such highwayman methods were in order that he himself might be followed, and possibly cap- tured, Captain Francis Greene was much in- censed because the farmer possessed no Dial aye Catarrh One efficient way to remove nasal catarrh is to treat its cause which in most cases is physical weakness. Captain Greene but cursed him loudly, and ordered his men off at all speed, One was behind at the farm- house, "It is all very well to come in the name of General Washington, sold to rob a man of his cattle, but what do I get fur it?" the fernier complained, "Why, a Man to drink with you, and your horses reurned to you safe and sound when hey are done with, Conte, cheer up, old mal, and trot out the applejacks„ The two kept merry company 1011 morning, the maid servants cowering in their beds at the clamor, . Meanwhile, with the loss of but little time, the party was upon the road after Burr, whose rapidly tilting tracks in the snow were nevertheless plain enough to guide them, Had there been no snow and no tracks in the road, Greene would have hunted hint out and found itis enemy with only his hot hatred as u guiding star, And so was the list of Mistress Prevost's guests swelled by a party of five. The last was coaling from still an- other direction. Mistress Alicia Wildell wail not a wont n to lose sight of a mat- ter once begun. Icer success in this 'affair still hung fire, and the fact chafed her spirit. She knew well enough of Captain Greene and his present occupa- tion. Had she not recommended him for the post? In return, the captain supplied her with news of his guest. Among other things, with a feeling of small triumph in turning the knife upon one who had wounded him so crulley, he dwelt upon Burr's devotion to Mistress Prevost, "He's daft over her, Goes often to visit her," he had said, and it had warmed his sick heart to see Alicia's passionate face. Once before, site had ridden over to the Hermitage, determined to se her rival; but she had found the place de- serted, the family heing away for the week's end. This night was the second opportunity that offered. Iter husband was from home; she was alone, and longing for mischief.
