Ex -Warden David Cantelon Re-
ported Filled id Action,
On Tuesday evening, Ex -Warden
David Cantelon received a telephone
rnfeoSage from hiss daughter, Mrs.
Weatherwax, of Orillht, stating that site
had received a letter from a chum of her
brother D.A. Cantelon, ibat he had been
killed in action by a shell in the trench.
The young soldier \vas in Orillia \viten
he enlisted with the 157111 Simcoe Co.
Battalion and went overseas last Oct-
ober. In about a week after arriving
in England he with his chum were in-
cluded in a draft of 100 sten to rein-
force the est Bath. in Prance, and he
had been in the thick of it ever since.
The New Era in speaking to Mr. D.
Cantelon, he stated that he was waiting
for ot:dal word from Ottawa. The
young soldier was in his 201,11 year and
had attended the C.. 0.1. prior to going
to Orillia. He was well liked by his
associates, He was here last summer
while on farm feeloaglf prior to Vim.;

Word has been received of the death
in Sault Ste, Marie, Out„ of Dr, - nem -
as McQuaid, a former well-known resi-
dent of McKillop Township and a grad-
uate of Seaforth Collegiate Institute.
The body is being brought home for
interment, lir. McQuaid was 42 years
:,f ego.

Quite a number of the young people
attended the Red Cross Concert Wield in
Londesboro on Tuesday evening.
Mrs. J'aisniore, of \\'mxeter, is visit
ing her mother, ahs. Mole who is 'in
very poor health.
Mr, and Mrs. Eastman autoed to
Arkona on Saturday. Mr, and Mrs. A.

An epidemic of whoopteg cough is
spreading among the children and some
of the older people here.
Mrs. John Workman who has been 111
with pleurisy is improving in health.
Mr. David Workman is :at present

his recovery.

In the Presbyterian church Last Sun-
day Rev. E, G. Powell gave an account
of scene of his work as Field Secretary
of the Temperance forces to Huron and
Perth. All were intensely interested.
He was accompanied by Mr, Agar, of
Toronto, Secretary of the Citizens'
Committee ref One Blotched. '
.AL•, and Mrs. Richardson reeeived the
sad news that their sun was killed in
France. About six years ago the fam-
ily came here from England. At the
beginning of the ivar the young man
was enthusiastic about going. lie en-
listed and later fought bravely in,
France, where he was gassed. After
spending many months in a hospital its
England he returned to the tiring tine.
No particulars of his death have been re-
ceived ;et, ;lis parents, brother and
sisters have the warm sympathy of all.
On Monday all were grieved to hear
that Mrs, Hugh McDiarmid, of Seaforth,
who had gone to London for treatment
had died that morning. The rentatms
were brought to llensall that evening
and taken to Seaforth for interment.
Until a few ,yelp's ago, she had lived om
their farm in the 3rd con., of Stanley,
when they sold out and removed to , ex -
forth, She was formerly Miss Rachel
Harvey, daughter of the late Joseph
Harvey. Besides a number of brothers
and sisters she leaves to mourn her
loss, her bereaved husband and two
daughters, Mrs, Thos. Baird. jr., and
Miss Kate at hone.

boys killed in action and three wound-
ed, in the war so far.
Dr. Elmer 'Fruelnner, son of Mr.
Dan Truenfner,i Goshen Line south, has
passed his final year at the College of
Dental Surgeons in Toronto and re-
ceived the degree; of D. D. S.
Dr. A. J, McKinnon is having a mod-
ern hen house erected on his premises
and inteieds going extensively into the
egg producion business.
The Blake Presbyterian Church was
crowded to the doors on Stunday triter -
noon; when memorial services were
conducted by the pastor, Rev, D. John.

and her son Lieut. Grassick was here this

Gauntlet.
Ottawa, May 22.—To give full effect
to the conscription measures the Gov-
ernment is taking, steps to prevent
slackers leaving the country to evade
Compulsory military service. An or-
der -in -Council has been passed, which
forbids the emigration of men of mili-
tary age from Canada, except by per-
mission of the Government. To give
effect to this those who desire to leave
the country must obtain a passport.
Without this they will be stopped at
the international boundary or the
Atlantic and Pacific ports.
It is believed 'un arrangement has
been reached with the United States
by which both couutriet Will be able
to conscript their ratan -power and
that those who seek to evade military
service by crossing the international
boundary will have to run the gauntlet
of a double set of officials,
The new law went into effect last
Friday morning.

a large sale are to be held in St. Marys,
