k
'11,
re you giving aid and
'comfort to the enemy?
Any householder in your neighborhood
who has a garden plot, or who owns a piece
of suitable vacant land that is not being
put under cultivation in order to increase
food production, is (though he or she may
not believe it) giving aid and comfort to
the enemy in restraining food production,
as really as is the Submarine Commander
who sinks an Allied ship laden with food.
The difference is only one of degree, not
of kind.
Look around you! Look aroundY ou !
If you have not yet decided to plant a vegetable garden make up your mind to
do so now. You will not regret it. There is still lots of time. Potatoes and beans may
be planted up to June lst and these are the best substitutes for wheat and meat.
For good, practical advice upon how to lay out and cultivate a Vegetable
Garden, write for a free copy of the booklet entitled; "A Vegetable Garden for
Every Home." This has been prepared by the Ontario Department of Agriculture for
the guidance of citizens who will respond to this call for increased production.

What a vindictive old thing that
Cruiser 'Vindictive was anyway. Just
because she couldn't sail the seas
any lot g"er herself she swallowed sev-
eral tons of '.concrete and settled her-
self comfortably down in the Ostend
channel, thus preventing nice, little
innocent U-boats from going in and
out at will.

A farmer remarked.to a newspaper
:man not long since : "I ylo not wish
to lose try ,son but if .I have to
.choose between giving my on to the
war and my, four daughters to the
Huns I know which will be my
choice."
It is in Europe the Hunmust he
beaten and it takes men to beat him
sell the patriotic talk in the world
will not do it -it takes young, strong
teen and guns and food. Canada
must supply her share of all three,
and it doesn't matter whether we're
comfortable while its being done,
either, or whether we make any pro-
fits, 3:n fact as loyal Canadians we
should scorn to consider such things
' until our men are safely back from
the war. .

The news that Dr, Deland, former-
ly Postmaster General. for Canada,
who had been held a prisoner in
Germany altnost since the beginning
of the war, had at last been releas"
was received with 'rejoicing
ghoul Canada. DDr, Deland, as
4t is pretty generally known, was
travelling iu Europe and was in
Belgium with his bride, a Belgian
lady, when war was declared, He
might have escaped and made his
way dome to Canada but he te-
mained to minister to the wounded
and later the hospital in which he
was serving fell Into German hands
and he was taken prisoner, He was
separated from his wife and taken to
an internment camp in Germany.
Madame Beland; mem remained in'
Brussels, later took ill and died, her
husband not being allowed even to
- visit her before her death. The Brit-
ish Government made several at-
tempts to have Dr, Boland exchang-
ed but pot until now has it been
possible to effect his release. Ti is
hoped that Dr. Beland will soon re-
turn to Canada, he is at present in
Holland, and, that he will take Itis
seat in the House of Commons as he
was returned by acclamation from
13eauce, Quebec, last December.
